Upholstery Question - '73 vs '70 Challenger
« on: October 07, 2007 - 01:05:00 PM »
I'm hoping someone can provide some information. I am cloning a '73 Challenger to a '70 T/A. The seats need to be re-upholstered. Legendary Auto Interiors has different upholstery for the '73 and '70. Can I use '70 vinyl upholstery on a '73 seat, or will I end up with upholstery that doesn't fit my current seats. Thanks for the help.

you may have issues with the seat foam and the covers mating up. You may get best answer from Legendary by phone if you dont get it here. good luck.

There is definitely something different between the 70-71 seat foam, and the 72-74. Maybe if you replace your seat foam with that of the 70-71 variety, you will be OK.  :dunno: As xblade suggested, Legendary Auto should be able to help you. Good luck, and let us know if you find the answer.

Correct me if I am wrong but the 70 seats have plastic back panels on the seats but dont the later cars like 72 and up or 73 and up have no panels on the seatbacks?

The form of the seat foam is definitely different between '70 and '73 and the seat covers may fit, but with difficulty.  bb71challenger is correct, the '70s had a plastic seatback shell.  Might be easier to find a set of '70 seats, if that's what you want.

Of course, this is the easy part in comparison to converting the '73 front and rears to a '70.

Legendary can do "custom" jobs I believe? Tell them you want the 1970 pattern to fit the 1973 seats and I bet they can do it for you.

You will still have the foam and listings to deal with though.

I have looked and have yet to find a lot of seat foams out there. Do you know of a place that has them Barry? I really want new foams when I redo the 71 deluxe interior in my car but have not found the right foams yet. There is chance the foams are still good but I would rather put new ones in just to do it right.

Can I use '70 vinyl upholstery on a '73 seat, or will I end up with upholstery that doesn't fit my current seats.

Unfortunately, it is not quite that easy.  The frames in the seatbacks are very different.

In the first 2 pictures below, you can see some 73 seats that I took apart.  On the left is the way the seat looks with foam and cover, and on the right is the steel 'shell', after I tore off most of the foam.  They apparently formed the foam right onto that shell, because it is tough to remove.

The 70/71 seats have a traditional wire frame with springs (instead of this 'shell'), and the foam slides over it.  I'm sorry I don't have a picture of the frame, but you can see some finished 70 seats in the 3rd picture below. The shape is somewhat different than the later seats, and the 70/71 frames have an open back, which is why they have that plastic cover.

In addition, the 70/71 have a button on the side to flip the seatback forward, while the later seats have a lever on the back of the seat. (You can see it at the lower left of the 1st picture).

As far as I know, the seat bottoms are the same for all years.

Having said all that, I would talk to Legendary, as Barry suggested.  You can find 70/71 frames, but they aren't common (I paid about $200 for cores...)  Best of luck to you!

Thank you for your help. I had no idea there was a difference between the '73 seats and the '70 seats. I've decided to keep the '73 seats for now, since it looks like making the seats I have into '70's would cost about $800.
Does anyone have an opinion regarding the following: do you think it would detract from the resale value of my T/A clone (which is currently a '73 R/T) to leave the interior '73 and just concentrate on the exterior T/A details?
Any input would be useful. Thanks

A 73 rally challenger cloned into a 70 t/a is not going to bring big bucks either way in my opinion. Your rally all original would bring better money in stock form numbers matching. A person wanting to buy your car as a clone would be looking to buy a street rod / hot rod/ clean car. You'd be better off cloning a 70. A 70 clone will bring a bit more money rather than a morphodite.  Just my opinion

I don't see clones bringing any kind of money anymore, and '72-74 T/A clones even less.  There was a Sublime '73 T/A clone on eBay awile ago and it just sat with no bids.  Nowadays, anyone wanting a T/A is going to get a T/A, I think.  Do it for for yourself, it that's what you want, but not to flip, because you won't get anywhere near your money back.  The '73 to '70 conversion is nowhere near as simple as it looks, especially for a T/A.

:iagree:
The cost of sheet metal alone is very high for the conversion. The doors and roof are about the only exterior parts that are not different from 73 to 70.  The hoods look the same from the outside but only if you use a R/T hood.  I would recommend doing the Rallye as a Rallye.  Then sell it to buy a 70 to make into a T/A clone.
