Rear End and 4 Speed Trans Fluid Change

I decided that was time to replace the rear end and the 4 speed trans gear oil on my 73 Chally..I  normally do it  myself  but due now to back problems and  now living in a apartment building ( manager reaction ) I stop on the local EZ Lube Franchise to inquiere the price and what  type of oil they use (the reason of why I stop there is because     they don't have to lift the car  they use the "old style pit" to do the work).

I ask if they have any old timers familiar with my type of car..here come the manager (probably around 20 Yrs old) and after answer on the affirmative I told him what  need to be done and he proceed to expain me that the transmission fluid change was expensive because they have to use "THE MACHINE"  to clear the fluid from the TORQUE CONVERTER , I told him for the third time that was a 4 speed, he look at me  :clueless:took a few seconds and responded..WELL..WHEN YOU BRING THE CAR WE WILL KNOW MORE ABOUT IT..after my first reaction  I compose my self and politely ask the price.. he give an estimate of $265.00 plus local tax.

That's about all you will find too. When I was putting togather the RR I went to the local Checker to get some gaskets for the 383. The young girl was trying to convince me a 68 RR had a 2.4L 4cyl. I just left!!

I would use synthetic 75-90 in the diff & either 80 -90 gear oil or Redline synthetic 75-90 for Manual trans

We've got a shop here that has a bay like you described, but they are very knowledgeable on old cars.  The guy that owns it is a mopar fanatic.  He had a 71 440 six pack challenger but he sold it a while back.  Good luck finding someone to help you out.  I'm friends with the manager that runs it so whenever I need to use a bay or his lift, it's no problem.  I'm just lucky I guess, lol. Anyway, sometimes you can luck up and find places where true true car guys are working but most of the time it's just like you described.  Keep searching, maybe you will find something.

The tran's fluid swap is easy. Pull the plug, let it drain, then fill it through the fill hole.  For the rear end, it isn't so easy.  The right way is to pull the driveshaft, pull off the rear wheels, unbolt the axle retainer nuts, pull both axles out at least 3" each side, unbolt the 3rd member and pull it out, letting grease drip and spill everywhere.  Then all of the old lube has to be wiped out then both sealing surfaces have to be cleaned till grease free, then put back together with or without a gasket depending on your preference.  I think $265 or more is what I would have charged you if I had to do it because you don't have a garage.  I've done all of mine and it isn't as easy as it seems. What would you charge to change someone elses tranny and rear-end lube?

 Take it to a Mopar Dealer and trust them before you trust a kid at a Jiffy Lube.

you can suck out 90% of the rear end lube with a suction gun & refill with new fluid , it will never get it all out but is still better than not doing it

I had a similar experience with on of those parts store wizards. I needed a set of Hemi valve cover gaskets.  First, I asked the guy if they even had Hemi parts.  He said he though they had a few, so I gave him a chance. The dude looked in the computer and walked back to get them. He came back with big block valve cover gaskets.  I told him that wouldn't work, and he got kinda huffy and said yes they would because that's what the computer showed. He said the 440 and the 426 Hemi were the same..      I left them laying on the counter and told him the computer needed to be corrected.......

I would love to change out the oil and fluids in my cars, but where do I put the old stuff?  Its not like I can dig a hole in the back yard and dump it.

Just capture the old fluid in an old container your don't want anymore and take it to any local "Quick-Lube" place.  Just about all of them will take it off your hands for ya....

I went to get e set of spark plugs for a Hemi on Sat & they did not have a listing for Champion plugs so he cross referenced A/C & Ngk both crossed over to the RJ12YC 440 plug , yes it would work but not well
