It's scary. With company already in trouble and all, if goes on long, then we might never see the new Challenger.

A stand has to be taken somewhere.  The key issues are job security (I must have missed that part of the Constitution that guarantees a job) and legacy health care, which I don't see how any company could afford.

My solution is for companies to stop offering health care as a benefit and give the money to the employee to purchase their own plan.  If every employer did this, you'd see health care costs plummet.

Note: This is an offshoot of my plan where employers no longer deduct taxes from employees' checks, requiring the employees to mail in taxes.  Do this and taxes will fall dramatically, as well.

Good idea.  The private sector made a move many years ago to go to defined contribution pension plans instead of defined benefit (or something like this).  Everybody knows exactly how much money is going into the "kitty".  It's a transparent system.

UAW reaches tentative contract with Chrysler

UPDATED: 10/10/07 5:34 p.m. EDT

The United Auto Workers this evening announced that it has negotiated a new labor contract with Chrysler LLC that covers 49,000 hourly workers.

The deal will put a quick end to the strike launched at 11 a.m. this morning by the union. In a press release issued after 5 p.m., the union announced that Chrysler workers would return to their jobs on the next available shift.

"This agreement was made possible because UAW workers made it clear to Chrysler that we needed an agreement that rewards the contributions they have made to the success of this company," said UAW President Ron Gettelfinger.

Details of the agreement were not immediately available. However, the deal is expected to follow the pattern set by General Motors. The UAW settled with GM after a one-day strike. Assuming that Chrysler workers ratify the deal, the union next will negotiate a pact with Ford Motor Co.

PRESS RELEASE: UAW reaches tentative agreement at Chrysler
The UAW this evening announced that it had reached a tentative agreement with Chrysler LLC. The strike against Chrysler at 11 a.m., following the expiration of an extension to the current labor agreement, will end immediately, the union said. The following is the UAW announcement.

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger and UAW Vice President General Holiefield announced today that the UAW has reached a tentative agreement with the Chrysler Corporation.

The strike against Chrysler at 11:00 this morning, following the expiration of an extension to the current labor agreement, will be recessed immediately. UAW Chrysler workers will be notified by the corporation to report to work on their next available shift.

"This agreement was made possible because UAW workers made it clear to Chrysler that we needed an agreement that rewards the contributions they have made to the success of this company," said Gettelfinger.

"Once again, teamwork in the leadership and solidarity in the ranks has produced an agreement that protects jobs for our communities and also protects wages, pensions, and health care for our active and retired members," said Holiefield, who directs the UAW*s Chrysler Department.

Details of the agreement are being withheld pending ratification votes by UAW Chrysler workers.

You guys are making too much sense for any of it to ever be put in place.  That would eliminate like, 20,000 bueratic positions.

I know I am going to take some heat for this one, but unions do more harm than good now. Chrysler should have said fine we'll close up shop, and you know the union workers would have freaked out. All the unions care about now is making their own pockets fuller. My fiances father worked for the butchers union for more than 20 years and all he saw was a total of a 3 dollar an hour pay increase of the course of those 20 plus years. At one time the unions were good, but now just a pain in the a$$.

Well, let me help you stir the pot buddy.

I am in a union where I work. The only thing they do is defend the inept(that should be fired), defend those that miss too much time(that should be fired), and if you are a minority, all you have to do is show up. Can you sense how I feel?   :dupe:

This U.S. is going to total crap anymore! Some Union workers to take advantage of their jobs too and way overpaid...the white male is the minority these days and its being proven in some big cities and will spread....Well are the 911 for the world and run our country in debt to help out other country that cant fend for themselves...You got that idiot on TV supporting mexican workers to come into our country....and union plants are going to mexico to pay them 8 dollars a day....What is wrong with this place.....I support that guy who tore down the mexican flag on the other thread.... :villagers:

Other countries take advantage of the U.S. because they know they can because there are feel sorry for other people in this country! Lets worry about the U.S. first!  :villagers:

Kick out the foreigners and give the jobs back to the U.S. people!

The unions should be responsible enough to "thin the herd".  It's in the best interest of all.  If they won't make the hard decisions then they should let mgmt do their jobs.  If not, the Asian car makers will continue to eat their lunch.  I'm not blaming the hardships on working man/women.  There are lots of other problems with the car industry IMHO.

 :iagree: wholeheartedly, 100%

something is wrong where I attend college, obtain my MS degree and still make $8 hour less than a 18 y/o with a GED.  I understand them wanting to have a better life, that is the american dream, but geez... unions just create shark frenzies.

I was talking to a co-worker of mine who said she knew a lot of people where she grew up that work at auto factories making 60-80K per year due to union contracts, the plant closed, many killed themselves.  Not saying its going to happen, but if unions keep pushing, they may just push those jobs out of the states for good.  Then where will they be?

Yeah gee, just think about those guys working at Chrysler dealerships trying to sell jobs to customers and then realizing "oh **** we might not get parts tomorrow!"

Luckily it got taken care of pretty quick - at least for now.  I can keep working!

You're absolutely right.  Unions..."sure was a good idea, 'til greed got in the way" (Bob Dylan)

I've been saying that for years (only no one listens).

I wish Chrysler would have taken a harder stance. Some have said that maybe they're not in a position to do so but, if not now, when?
