Unique VIN #s?
« on: October 10, 2007 - 10:01:49 PM »
Are the last 6 digits in the VIN are unique regardless of car line, body type, model year, or production plant?

For example, are any of the following possible (please forgive any inconsistencies):

Scenario #1 (Same plant different body type)
1970 Cuda with VIN# BS23U0B0000001 vs. 1970 Challenger with a VIN# JS23U0B0000001

-and/or-

Scenario #2 (Different plant same body type)
1970 Cuda with VIN# ES23U0B0000001 vs. 1970 Challenger with a VIN# JS23U0B0000001

Thanks!

The last #s are,  sequence #s of what the plant built,  I think they could be the same. Different plants will have JS23UOB..B=Hamtrack Detroit plant    JS23UOE..E= LA Cali plant

Each plant assigned VINs starting with 100001. So, as an example, you will not ever find a JH23G0B100001 & a BH23G0B100001

It would be possible to find a JH23G0E100001 & a BH23G0E100001 from the LA plant though. (one of them anyway, not both)

The VIN numbers used are fictious, I only use them as examples.

Also, the cars were not built sequentially based on the VIN number like most people seem to think.  ;)

Thanks.......so if the seq# are unique within a given plant, and the eng/ trans mission are matched to a specific VIN; then can it be assumed that no engine or transmission would have the same numbers?

When i decode mine, it says Sequence Number 150628 = 50627th Vehicle.  I have decoded it from two places, and it says the same thing.

The reason I ask is I have a 440 motor and tranny that are matching, but according to Barry's website, the seq# stamped on the units link back to a 340 made in the same plant and assembled in the same year.

I was under the impression that all engines and trannys are uniquely labeled, as long as they came from the same plant.......if that were the case then something must be in error:

1.  The information I collected is wrong.

2.  Dodge messed up during the stamping process.

3.  The information I researched is wrong.

4.  The engine is a 340 and not a 440; I could have mis-identified it, but shouldn't be hard to confuse the two?

Thanls!

Yes, unless someone at the factry screwed up or if someone re-stamped a block later.

Then the websites you got the information from are wrong.
