Replacing front frame rails

I am about to start the  process of replacing the rusted-out front frame rails on my Challenger with good used ones.  I know this is a very big job and would be interested in tips from anyone who had done this before.

I have no clue how to do them but I did see a very nice article today in a Mopar magazine, not sure which one, on how to replace the rear frame rails.   You might want to look in your local news stand to find it. 

I forget what was on the cover but there are only so many Mopar mags.  It was not Mopar Collector's Guide though.
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

I would make sure the car is level and supported very well, then take a lot of measurements before you cut anything off.  I would probably only do one side at a time also.

They had other helpful basic bodywork articles also.

Have the K-member bolted on before welding. This should help keep everything square, since your final location has to have the k-frame bolts lined up anyway.

I will be doing the same thing this winter... keep me posted on your progress, when I get to mine I will pm you with anything I discover. Mine is a bit different, I  have to replace mine because of a collision. I have already had my frame pulled to spec so everything is within tolerance, now I have to replace the damaged areas.

Make sure the car is on a frame jig, held solid in place. It MUST be secured to a jig. 1/8" movement in one area can multiply ten-fold in another area. Take GOOD measurements, record them carefully. Make sure the radiator core support is secured to the car as well as the jig. Be sure to keep the car off a rotisserie. Start drilling out spot welds, get plenty of cutters, there are a TON of spot welds you will need to drill out. Take your time, it will be a slow process. Plan to spend a lot of hours removing the old rail. then  take your time grafting in the new one. Keep measuring, make sure its square when it goes back in place.
Its helpful to look at what the stock car crowd does as far as frame jigs. They build a brace for every point BEFORE they cut it up and rebuild it.

We do stuff like this all the time. In fact in the next couple months we have a 1970 AAR coming in for the same thing, Used rails, as well as a ton of other metal work.

Oh yea, don't forget to HAVE FUN. Thats why we all do this.
