Wheelie Popping Snake Cuda Videos
« on: October 11, 2007 - 02:54:04 PM »
I came across these videos today.  I shot them before I became a board member here and forgot about them.  I took an old AFX HO scale Cuda slot car and stretched the trunk so I could fit a counterweight back there and increase the mechanical advantage of the weight.  Then I made a body mounting bracket that hinges around the rear axle.  The car pops wheelies at the hit of the throttle, and comes back down as soon as you let off.  So the car will pop a full track length wheelie, or you can make it pop up and down by quickly grabbing and releasing the throttle.  The front wheels go up with the body to make it look more realistic.

Wow!  That is really cool!  Very ingenious!

So that is a vintage Cuda body?  Was it a funny car or a regular car and you modified it?  How did you make the hinges hinge on the rear axle?  Just some flat metal?  That is very cool!  Sorry for all the questions!

It is a vintage body from the early 70's.  It started as a 1971 Cuda funny car with a molded-in '71 Cuda grille.  I replaced it with a 1970 grille from a Johnny Lightning diecast.  I also removed the molded-in backup lights to make it look more like a '70.  Then I stretched the trunk area as mentioned previously.

The hinge is two pieces of plastic that hang from the body and rest between the inside of the rear wheel and the chassis.  Each has a notch in it to slip over the axle.  Then I tied to two hinges together with more plastic to strengthen it.

 That's awesome!!!!!  Great job!!!
I've got a ton of slot cars and track still stashed away. And every once in awhile I'll pick up another one at a garage sale. Me and my kids used to have a blast racing them. I actually just picked up the Black 70 Charger slot car from "The Fast and Furious" Movie. I think Johnny Lightning makes it. That would be a cool one to make into a wheelie car.

Is that F&F Charger an AFX style or a T-jet style?  I'm not sure if a T-jet style slot will have enough oomph to get the body to lift upon launch.

Cool.  There might even be enough body length behind the rear axle for the counterweights to fit and be effective without having to lengthen it like I did.  Then you just have to trim the body mounts, create a hinge, and if you want realism figure out a way to mount the front wheels to the body so they go up also.
