What do you look for in a Tranny shop? (poll)
« on: October 15, 2007 - 08:46:37 AM »
I am curious what is the most important.
If you picked other, give your answer in the thread.
If you picked more than one, number from most important to not most important in a thread answer.

Thanks, tactransman

I picked local reputation and years in business as most important. With both of these going for a business it would seem to be a sure bet. But, an outrageous price could deter me if others are competitive in these categories.

Warranty would be a consideration also but from your perspective, how can you control what a hard :burnout:
driving customer might do to your transmission repair?

I may be a little biased ;), but I wish I could vote all three times for reputation..................a good reputation justifies the price and warranty (and vice-versa).

That is not to say that price and warranty are not factors by themselves, but from my experience most transmission repair shops are....um.....shady in regards to price and warranty (no offense Terry).

Price
I have seen it both ways………shops that will quote you >$1800 to correct a problem that they know is most likely related to a $100 sensor; and the ones that will say anything to get your tranny on their bench....knowing that once its all in pieces you will not take it somewhere else for a better price when “unexpected expenses” arise.

Warranty
A long warranty is good, but there is always considerations and conditions on both sides.
As a customer it is inconvenient to be without your vehicle due to additional repairs, and it can be a lot of work if you have to drop your tranny yourself.
From a shop's perspective I would imagine that warranty work = no money, so how much time and parts does a shop throw at it before they actually start losing money on the deal........once that happens, I would imagine that most shops just do enough to get out from under it

I may way off here but if you pay a reasonable amount to have knowledgeable installer put good quality parts in your tranny, then you really don't need a definitive warranty.

When I made my decision to go to a shop, I ended up driving >1.5 hours and passed at least 30 different shops to get to TAC transmissions…....was still the best decision I made during that rebuild………..plus TAC introduced me to this site  :woohoo:

Hmm, the term "Tranny Shop" brings up some strange and disturbing images.   :eek7:

I think he was referring to tranny as in "transvestite," i.e., it was a joke.

I voted for reputation, experience, and warranty, but as I think about it I'm going to include an "other" option: customer service.  How I'm treated, from the moment that I walk in the door, tells me a lot about whether any shop wants and/or needs my business.

Honesty
Automatics are basically beyond most car owners understanding, it is very easy for a company to tell a customer the tranny is shot & run up a $1000+ repair bill if if the problem is simple , even having a good reputation in the area is no indication of honesty as the customer could be very happy with the work even if they were taken advantage of .
For example I had an issue with a 727 where the car would not move , I took the tranny to a friend who determined it was just the oil pump , he checked the rest of the tranny & told us it was built very well using top quality parts & just replaced the pump for us , total bill was under $200

I voted  other.   I picked my tranny guy based on talking to him. I do not know how to rebuild an automatic, as I do not know how to do a lot of things. But, I am fairly good at figureing out if someone who claims to, knows what he is talking about. My tranny guy seemed to have a good idea of what my problem was, and I trusted his ability. Since the first one, I have used him over 6 different rebuiilds, and have not been dissapointed. I liked his price and told him to build like he was building one for himself and if it costs a dollar more, do it , and I woulld cover the extra.......so far , great jobs, always..........and ait't that the bottom line.............

personally talking to the shop or the tech will tell me everything i need to know but ive got alot of trans experence (went to tech school for it) but in the end price is the largest factor.

Local Reputation, Warranty, then price. Shop size doesn't matter to me, a single guy in his garage can do some really good trans work.

I agree with Bandit67.  I need to be able to communicate with anybody who does any kind of work on my "Toy" cars.  If they know their stuff, I can usually tell by their enthusiasm, and willingness to listen to what I want.  If they like what they are doing, they will do it better.  The fact that Tactransman spends time here helping the rest of us keep these dinosaurs roaring tells me that he likes what he is doing, and is interested in putting out a better product.  That is good enough for me.

Reputation is very important.  I agree with honesty and how this person handles complaints.   :working:
