Starter

How do you check your starter to see if It's bad?
At times my starter spins, other times it clicks.
I turn the ignition off, then try again and it starts.
If it is the starter do I have this one rebuilt,or do I buy another one.

Low battery charge, i wouldn't guess the relay quite yet. but possible. Loose battery connections, loose connections at the starter, or a bad starter solenoid that has pitting on the disc (which rotates). It could not bite, then rotate, then bite when you light the key again.

The clicking would make me guess low battery.  When it does turn over is it really slow, or does it turn over like you would normally expect it to?  As far as testing a starter, I had one acting up so I pulled it out and took it to AutoZone, where it turned out it was bad.  A re manufactured one was around $50 I believe  (this was about 8 years ago, though).  As far as testing one while still in the car, I don't know if that is possible or not.

I think it's your starter. You can go with the mini-starter. Do you have headers? The clicking maybe the starter relay doing it's job, just the starter won't do it's thing. Been there, done that.  :pullinghair:

No headers.
If the starter spins would it be the starter?

When mine went bad it did spin, but what happened was the starter gear had sheared the pin that locked it to the shaft, so the shaft would turn but the gear did not.  It sounded like a real fast wirrrring (?) sound, for lack of a better term.  It did not turn the motor over at all.

Hi Al, it could possibly be the armiture in the starter (dead spot). I think Rayelco Alt/Starter Rebuilders are still in Lodi on main street, they could rebuild your original one. They did all my  starters & alternators when I live up there.
Maybe I'll see you Sunday at the Fair Lawn show...

usually it si the contact ring inside the starer , the click is the electro magnet inside pushing out the drive & pulling the contact ring in , if the contacts are burned it will not turn , often a few trys will get it to start , soi yes it is the starter , if the battery was low it will do the same thing but will not have enough power to turn it over when the ring connects no matter how many times you try

if it is the contacts, it will just keep doing this, being annoying and unpredictable...   until finally it wont start no matter times you turn the key.
