Challenger Exhaust tips

I'm looking for a little help.  Last year I put a 440 into my Challenger, which came stock with a 318.  Due to a temporary lack of funds, I had to stick with the stock exhaust (2") from the headers back (I did at least put on a set of 40 series Flowmasters).  This winter I am going to put in a 2 1/2" exhaust, running the tips out the back with the box tips.  My question is this: I have been told that the exhaust chokes down to 2 1/4" out the back of the mufflers, so what size tips do I get?  I have seen 2" and 2 1/2", but no 2 1/4".  Do these even exist?  Also, what's your thoughts on chrome vs. stainless steel tips?

With the big block you probably should not have the exhaust choked down to 2 1/4, go 2 1/2 all the way.

 :iagree: I'd splurge for the tti tips as well. You'll pay for it but the quality will be there  :thumbsup:

 :iagree: I've replaced many a tips over the years, the standard tips will rust and the chrome will flake where as the stainless will not. Go with the 2.5" TTI and everything will fit correctly. Oh, I would also run the X pipe as the exhaust will be quieter in the car.  :2cents:

If you lack funds, you are still limited by the exit holes on the mufflers. Any sized muffler to tips pipe can now be made.  If you have some old chrome tips, you can weld on a newer 2.5" or 3" pipe yourself.  As much as I drive my car now, I still have a set of factory tips on that I installed around '83. The chrome is still looking good on them.

I'm not so much short on funds, now.  It was just the 440-6 and 4 speed swap that wiped me out last year.  I have a whole nother round of stuff going on this year, with the exhaust the final piece.  Thanks for all the advice so far.  Keep it coming.

Go with the Full TTI exhaust.  I installed a complete 3" setup on a friends 44-6 Cuda, Headers to tips.  A very nice setup.

So has anyone had any experience with the Ebag tips I've seen, usually with a BIN of around $150.00?  I know a lot of people recommend the TTIs, but at over $400, I'm just wondering if the trade off in quality is enough to justify the cost.  Just curious.

I have seen some tips that are shped wrong & virtually all tips even TTI are missing the deflecter plate to direct 1/2 the exhuast out the inner opening of the tip , I always weld in the deflecter as it changes the sound

For the restorers, all of the original tips were wavy all the way around. Like they banged them out with a hammer. All of the new ones are too straight.  Most buyers like straight and new, but most point judges will see repop tips right away.

the factory tips have an angled plate welded inside where the two retangle tips come together , it angles back at 40* or so & covers 1/2 of the round opening where the exhaust pipe enters the tip from the rear
 I will try to get a pic , if anyone else has a pic please post it
I talked to Sam @ TTi & tried to convince him to add this to his tips but he said I have been the Only person to notice or complain  , it does change the sound though

  I should have had a closer look at my tips before I asked the question above, mine already have the deflector plates in them, hopefully though somebody else can benefit.   :2thumbs:
