Here is a direct comparison. go here
http://www.rims-n-tires.com/rt_specs.jspon the left do, 295, 45, 18 on 18 x 9, +24offset. for you, do 265/55/17 17x8, 0offset (4.5") or -12offset (4")
On the 4" backspacing compared to my wheels. It says "Package will stick out 21 mm (0.8'') farther. Make sure that you have enough room under the fender. If not, consider narrower tires or higher offset."
On the 4" backspacing it says "Package will stick out 9 mm (0.4'') farther. Acceptable for most cars. "
So yes i run wider tire and wider rim. However your wheels will stick out twords the 1/4 lip .8" or .4" further. On my car i dont have that much room to play on. I'm not trying to get you to comment on my setup or what have you, i appriciate it...but, my point has been to look at what i have and compare before you buy something that wont fit.... Another point is that it will change where your rubbing issue may be, it may clear sitting still, but as the suspension travels it might rub further down the well. Take a look at the picture i posted, if i hit a h-a-r-d bump, ill get a rubber streak here...
