Need pics. of 17" rims with more rubber..
« on: October 20, 2007 - 05:05:46 AM »

I got these 17" wheels, and want to try'em out on the Challenger, but think the tires looks like rubberbands on them.

It's 7" with 215 - 50, - and 8" with 245 - 45 on'em...

Anyone got pics. of 17" rims with wider, and higher tires..???

DeSoto is gonna get some wire-wheels...

How much tire do you want? they have more height than 275/60/15s.... unless you start going to truck tires, thats about it lol. Next up is usually 29.5 or 30" tall tires. The sidewall is there, and this car has super stock springs. with stockers they would rub on the outsides of the wheel wells...

These are rubber bands my friend

that may fit, depends on the wheel backspacing. They are just as tall as the tires im running on the back. What backspacing?

Well that puts them out closer 1/4 lip, more likely to rub. Remember i have super stock springs, same height tires, 6" backspacing and my wheels have rubbed once at the back of the well....just keep that in mind.

Here is a direct comparison. go here

http://www.rims-n-tires.com/rt_specs.jsp

on the left do, 295, 45, 18   on 18 x 9, +24offset.       for you, do 265/55/17 17x8, 0offset (4.5") or -12offset (4")

On the 4" backspacing compared to my wheels. It says "Package will stick out 21 mm (0.8'') farther. Make sure that you have enough room under the fender. If not, consider narrower tires or higher offset."

On the 4" backspacing it says "Package will stick out 9 mm (0.4'') farther. Acceptable for most cars. "

So yes i run wider tire and wider rim. However your wheels will stick out twords the 1/4 lip .8" or .4" further. On my car i dont have that much room to play on. I'm not trying to get you to comment on my setup or what have you, i appriciate it...but, my point has been to look at what i have and compare before you buy something that wont fit.... Another point is that it will change where your rubbing issue may be, it may clear sitting still, but as the suspension travels it might rub further down the well. Take a look at the picture i posted, if i hit a h-a-r-d bump, ill get a rubber streak here...

My 1999 Camaro SS.

17x9.5 up front, 275/45/17
17x11 out back. 315/35/17

It will be pretty hard to find a tall side wall for a 17" rim in a performance oriented tire.

You can find 45, 50 and 55 profile tires in 17" diameters, but you have to look at the truck applications to find them, and they are going to be around 30-32 inches tall
