Rubber Bumpers
« on: October 21, 2007 - 02:54:04 PM »
Does anyone know how to prep rubber bumpers for paint?? Can you sand them?? Can you put somthing like body filler on them?? I  know you have to put flex agent in the paint but have no clue how to prep them. I pruchased some repoped one a while back and they will need a little work to be perfect.

You can purchase rubber filler (bought it at my local paint shop) and then sand it down.  I didn't use flex agent on mine since the rubber on mine is original, thus has no "flex" to it.  Overall, it was suprisingly easy to work with.  Here is a pic of how it turned out.

Thanks. Do you remember what brand of rubber filler you used?

It is a SEM product and comes in one of those two-part plunger applicators like epoxy glue comes in.  It is available at Finishmasters or other auto paint stores.  You squeeze it out, mix it, apply it to the cuts and scrapes on the bumper, and you can sand it in 10 minutes.  Evercoat sells a glazing putty to finish smoothing it, but since the bumpers have hardly any give (except for the very ends), we sprayed it with a couple of coats of Featherfill and then sanded it smooth.
