Is it just me or .....?
« on: October 21, 2007 - 06:52:17 PM »
Am I the only one who is so old school that it is against some kind of muscle car rule to put modern wheels and little thin tires on a Cuda or Challenger?  I guess I haven't bought into the whole pro-touring thing...
Just wanted to know if I'm the only one who is so old school...

I'm mostly in to stock, but I also appreciate mild customs.

I've never been one to really follow the steelie or rallye wheel rule myself. Whenever I go to a actual mopar only show, its not interesting to see either rallyes or steelies. The occasional magnums or cragars can slide under that category too. I for one would like some performance besides a straight line out of my car one day. That entails some bigger wheels, which allows for bigger brakes as well, they aid in braking and have less sidewall flex in cornering. To each their own, i can appriciate the paint dab stockers, ferrari chasing corner carvers, super or turbocharged monsters, and the brutal fast mopars. They all fall under that Mopar umbrella to me  :2thumbs:

I don't mind the new wheels, but don't care at all for the rubber band low profile tires, it just does not look right.  I"m going after a set of American Racing Torque Thrusts, probably 17 inch front / 18 inch back with as tall a tire as I can put on them.

Personally, I don't like anything over 15" on muscle cars. I do think bigger than that is OK if there is the performance to back it up.

We all have are likes, and dislikes. But why would anyone not want there ebody to handle, and stop better?  I understand keeping certain cars original. But if you dont have a #s macthing documented car, whats the big deal with making it more fun, and safer to drive.
I love original, and pro-touring cars.

There are alot of them that don't look right. A select few high dollar cars pull it off.Often it makes them look like big plastic toys.I had a hard time bridging the gap for the look I was going for.Old/New. 17" definatly handle better. Better tires.More choices. You have to spend alot of cash and time to run 20's+  I think larger wheels are here to stay though.  :dunno:

Although I prefer the Rallye and Magnum-style wheels, I have to admit a liking for the way 16" rims look on the cars.  There are a number of alloy wheels I've considered in the past.  Given the long project hiatus I don't know what I'd put on the car now (not the Appliance Steel Spoke or Mercury Cougar mags I have on hand, the latter coming with the car when I bought it), but not necessarily stockers either.

I won't consider anything bigger than 16" on my car; I really don't like the rubber band look either but to each their own.  As long as its not rollerskated like some toy honda.  Those were flat ugly.

Tires are very simple to swap out & totally change the look & performance of a car , & with decent tires getting ever harder to get on 14 & soon 15" sizes & with the performance gains of the larger wheels i am into the New look , 17-18" wheel look great past 18 starts to look Off to me + the chances of distroying a rim on our rough roads gets too risky considering the costs

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Most of us like the look of our Classic Cars as they were back then, that is what probably attracted us to them in the first place. However, we used to call it "Hot Rodding" and that is what made our Classics more desireable, so things got changed to make for a more personalised car.  :cooldancing:
In the history of cars somebody always wanted more from their vehicle than what the factory were serving up so enter the "Hot Rodder".   :burnout:
These were the people who made the cars we now desire more attractive to us.  :2thumbs:
Having said all the above I am an Old School person and prefer a more balanced look with my wheels. The new rubber band style wheel may be better on a state of the art vehicle, but I think they make some cars look top heavy and out of balance visually.

Factory appearing with modern hidden upgrades is nice. I like my cars to be able to let people walk up to them and think they're factory until they really start to look closely (even then miss things). 15" wheels are the only way to go IMO. If I want cornering performance I'll buy a modern Australian V8, if I want all out balls to the walls torque and straight line speed, I'll drive Muscle, after all, that's what these cars were built to do. I don't hate big wheels, 17-18" is as big as they should go on these cars. I myself will never do it. Better handling performance yes, but lets be real, if that is what you're after when you bought your E-Body then you're probably in the wrong club.

Nope, not just you.  Every time I see 17" or bigger wheels with rubber bands wrapped around them, I can't help thinking that they'd look nice on a wagon.
