I had some discussions with a buddy regarding putting in a shallow pit that would decrease the distance the car needed to be lifted to work on it.  This would put the ceiling at 10'4" so it doesn't help a lot.  A major pit ie drive down into the garage would be very expensive due to concrete.  I haven't checked bylaws but I'm doubting this is permitted.

I just boxed in a 6x10 area in the ceiling. The roof of the car fits right in. Aso make sure the garage door is high enough to clear a hood or deck lid. Can get some pics if interested.

Boxed the horizontal 2x12's just as you would when installing pull down stairs. Then I put another row of 2x12's hoizontally 14inches up from the original. If you are looking at it from the front you  are taking a triangle shape truss and turning it into an A shape truss. I tried pics but not enough room.Hope this isnt too confusing :clueless:

I've got the winter to design a detached garage that will accommodate a 4 post life (11' ceiling on one side at least).  If anybody has pics of theirs, especially the roof trusses, I would love to see them.   The garage will be 24x26 wide and can only have an 8 foot wall on one side.  The opposite wall can be taller.

Not sure what your design is, but if you still want trusses you can use what's called a "Scissor Truss" or a "Skandia Truss" to get more height under it. I've seen trusses that were not uniform, meaning one half varied in it's construction from the other half. I think you'd be able to talk with a supplier or an engineer to see what would have to be done to alter the truss to be higher on one wall than the other.

Here's some examples.

Thanks.  The scissor truss doesn't quite do it but the Skandia design might.  I haven't seen that one before.  I'll get to a truss co. this winter and see what they can do.

ps I went to the Garage Store last weekend.  You can spend alot of money on lifts, flooring, cabinets, etc.  I was drooling in their display garages. :grinyes:  Some of their epoxy flooring paint systems are over $5/sq ft!

After thinking some more, I remembered there is another version of the scissor truss type you might be able to use, but just couldn't recall the name. It's a "dual pitch half scissor" truss. Check this site out to see the angle & shape.
