kickdown linkage
« on: January 19, 2004 - 09:23:37 PM »
The tranny linkage on my chally is probably from another mopar. It has the one piece, 3/8" round steel bar with several bends on it to get it from the carb to the kickdown linkage on the tranny. My problem is when I try to adjust it, the steel rod ends up hitting the firewall. Is the actual linkage on the tranny also adjustable or is the rod all I have to work with? Any ideas ?

I personally hate the stock kick-downs as they are a pain the arse to adjust... scrap it and call up Summit Racing... order up there Lokar kickdown cable... piece of cake!! ;) :D

I agree with LB, they work great. Be sure to get the bracket that bolts to the carb base, I think they call it a throttle cable bracket. It doesn't come with the kickdown cable.

rt rag:

If you are looking to stay stock with your kickdown linkage, I know all the pieces are sold new through the Paddock.  I wish I could remember who the original vendor is because I would buy direct if possible - places like the Paddock and Year 1 kill you with shipping charges.

RT Rag, Bouchillon performance sells a cable kit which comes with all the brackets and instructions you need. I put one on my Challenger a few years back and the trans shifts more precisely than before. No more stiff springs on the throttle. No more linkage binding up.  :)Not sure about the summit kit mentioned earlier.

Both kits are excellent. The Lokar kit with the bracket included is a little less expensive though, about $15- $20 less I think.

If I'm not mistaken, it's the same linkage that was on my 318/904 combo in my 71 barracuda.  I beleive the bracket that the linkage staps into on the transmission can be removed, turned a few degrees foreward, and reinstalled.  If I remeber correctly, it bolts on similar to a morotcycle shifter.  You'll have to adjust it up top too though becasue if you don't, there will be too much travel.

Another question to ask, and comment to add.  What is the second (inboard) hole used for on the bracket that is on the transmission side of the linkage?  Possible to compensate for a throttle linkage with shorter travel?  Just noticed it today.

if you ar eusing th factory linkage you may need to bend it to fit or replace it with the correct piece , I have bent a few of them toi make them work properly or go to the cable system
The inner hole on the lever will allow it to operate with less travel as long as it doesn`t bind
