Swapping E-body Rallye dash question...
« on: October 23, 2007 - 01:27:52 AM »
If I put a Rallye dash into a standard dash car, will I need the light bar from the underside of the dashpad too? How are standard dashes lighted? Never had one. Just wondering how easy of a swap this might be. Thanks

if you can get the Ralley light bar do it , it will light the gauges better than the std light bar
the swap is realitively easy , you need to add a couple of wires Tach wire & power for the clock & extend 1 or 2

You will also need a different oil pressure sending unit to work with the Rally gauges.

What you need to do to make your standard harness work.

1) Change oil pressure sending unit to gauge unit
2) Cut the wires off the oil warning light
3) Connect the grey oil light signal wire to the oil gauge
4) Connect the dark blue oil light wire to the tach power. (This wire is 12V ignition switched)
5) Run a wire from the negative coil post to the tach terminal
6) Splice 12V continuous power from  the cigarette lighter to the clock

Thanks. I'll see if the light bar ir there. Is that how a standard dash is lit too? Or is it backlit? I should see if the harness is there too, then I shouldn't have to do the mods (thanks Katfish!).

Standard gauges are lit the same way. The difference is the rallye gauges have a four light bar and the standard have a three light bar.

If you're not too concerned about the original look, or much driving at night, I would just keep the 3 bulb light strip (in fact that is what I will be doing with mine this winter).  I say this because you will look at spending probably around $100+ for a restored rallye light strip.  If money is not much of an issue then it should just be a straight swap, I think.  I'll keep an eye out for one later on down the road.

I will do  most of my driving of weekends and at night... I guess I could add a light as long at the holes are right...cant remember how it looks right now... been a while since I  pulled mine out.

if the lights can me moved I could just shift them to point where I want them...

anyone know:
are the light port/vent louvers the same (just 1 less bulb)?
can the bulb locations be moved?

I'm not 100% positive (maybe 99.9%), but I don't think the bar or bulbs can be moved.  The reason for the 4 bulbs in the rallye light is because each one is lined up right over the top of each gauge pod, giving the best possible light.  I'm not sure how the lighting diminishes using the 3 bulb strip with a rallye dash  :feedback: , but I rarely drive at night which is why I'm not concerned about it, but if you will be driving a lot at night, then it might be worth the investment.

I would think you could splice a 4th light in if you want/need one.

You might be able to, but I don't think you would get them to line up with the gauge pods.  I'm not positive because I have never looked at a rallye / non rallye side by side, but I am assuming that there is a different amount of distance (3-4"?) between the individual bulbs on each strip.

You will be well served to make the non-rallye work as the rallye light bars are very pricey.  :money:
