Finally ordered my head unit and front speakers... what Subs?
« on: October 24, 2007 - 01:23:23 AM »
I decided to go with a Pioneer Premier DEH-P690UB w/built in USB control, Infinity 3.5'' Kappas and a Kenwood KFC-415C 4''x10'' Center Speaker. I have an Alpine FRS-240 4 channel amp but I dont know if I am going to use it yet. I plan on getting some Infinity 6x9's for the rear deck and maybe one or two 12'' subs in the trunk.

Anyone have any experience with shallow subs like the Pioneer Premier TS-SW124D or other shallow subs? I would like to limit the size and weight of the box necessary - I like my trunk space too.

I am not a huge fan of HEAVY bass, but I want the subs to balance out the rest of the system. Suggestions and experience welcome..

Thanks in advance.

what kind of power are you gonna put to the subs?  personally i usually use 10's rather than the 12's much tighter bass not so boomy is this for a show car or something thats just gonna be there for listening enjoyment?

I use POLK speakers for everything i own now and alpine head units.  Alot will factor into if your using just deck power or going with a full amp set up for the interor speakers.  On the sub's you can use alot of different set up's a mono amp, or just bridging a 2 or 4 channel for the amount of power you want.  Also adding a crossover network will help with the sound quality.

Kenwood has a new shallow depth sub that is getting good reviews around here. I am going to get one installed in my truck on the 8th and I will be able to give a personal experience review. There are tons of quality subs out there and  it all depends on what you want. If you want nice fill bass just pick a brand you like, I prefer the WO or W3 for low power subs. If you want bass that goes through you and out the other side, gives you a massage and makes the hairs on your arms and legs tickle then I like the W7 from JL. I have had a 12W7 since the released and it is still going strong with only a 500/1 JL amp. With a 1000/1 it would really come alive. Slot ported boxes give a lot of extra bass with hardly any frequency response loss.

That's the same head unit I have - you'll love it.

How you going to install the subs.  I have a 10" sub in a box and can't figure out how to install it.

I am going to put 2 8" subs in mine. They are Jbl GTO 804's. The base sounds great (if you are not into massive base) and the room they need for a box is tiny. I actually saw a set mounted in the saddle bags of a harley and could not believe the sound they made.
