Wiper Motor Restoration
« on: November 03, 2007 - 09:35:20 PM »
My wiper motor works fine, but I'd like to just take the barrel portion and have it re-plated (gold cadmium).     Has anyone else done this?    Any recommendations?   Thanks

SMS did a great job on mine at a reasonable price with lightning fast turn-around time.

I too believe in trying to do things on a budget even though it's getting harder when dealing with anything Mopar. We "spruced" ours up which involved a few things:
* wire wheel and steel wool to the die cast gear body
* replacing some wires and sliding insulation from new wires onto the existing wires
* steel wool the end of the motor housing
* masking off and fine-sanding the steel motor cover with up to 600 grit sand paper, polishing with steel wool and then spraying it simultaneously with a (just a) mist of gold metallic paint and clear lacquer
Looks decent and the only thing I didn't have around is the $5 can of Duplicolor gold paint.

If you want to paint it yourself, Eastwood sells a cad plated looking spray paint kit.

Thanks Ksirens..... been there done that -- and while it looks "ok" -- next to my re-plated (gold Cad) brake booster, the Eastwood paint system just isn't cutting it....

I had the same problem with my SSBC brake booster... I repainted mine...

I might Clear Coat it to make it more shiney....but I am not sure yet.

Follow-up question -- is it tricky to take the "barrell" portion (housing) off the wiper motor assembly (so I can send it out to get re-plated?   Anything I should be watchful of.....

I had an old junk one I tried to take apart... it wasn't super easy. there are spring loaded brushes or magnets in there... so I got to top cap off and started to pull it apart - but then stopped. I ended up just using a new one.

As far as painting it I just taped mine off real good and sealed up and holes prior to doing it.
