Fiber hood and hood pins.
« on: November 14, 2007 - 01:33:45 PM »
I just installed a fiber hood and am having a problem with the front end of the hood shaking vecause the fiver flexes a bit with the wind. Is there anything special I need to do when making the holes for the pins and after I make them?

This is for a Lexus and not a E-Body so it may be a little different. Can anyone with esperience point me to a good set that I should try out?

I'm not sure what kind of pins would be used on a Lexus, or if they would be like the old Mopar pins.  :clueless:

My steel hood has some vibration in the front at Hiway speeds, thus I added hood pins to look cool, and for functionality. I don't think you would need to do anything special to drill thru fiber.

I went by the store and got some RTV Silicone sealant and a bunch of painters tape so I guess its time to buy some pins...

From what I saw while looking online it doesn't really matter what type of pin I get.... I just need to install them in the flattest parts of the hood possible and all should be good... I looked at some old style pins and they all seem to be more for looks and maybe stopping major shaking not just the slight flexing/vibrations I'm getting.

So does anyone know of pins that will look somewhat old style and still pull my hood down a bit and steady at highway speeds without cracking the fiber?

I could be totally off the mark here, but I think the hood pins just keep the hood from flying up, they don't stop the vibration. At least in my case. There is still some shaking, but at least I know I have a backup.

Hood bumpers are to stop vibration. Hood pins are to hold the hood down. Pins originated on fiberglass and aluminum race panels that couldn't mount heavy weight, traditional spring loaded clamping devices.

Hmm.... So what should I get to stop the vibrations?

I just wanted to make a quick note for everyone... What my hood is doing isnt really "vibrating" I would be fine with slight vibrations but whats happeneng is its not 100% flush so it catches a bit of wind and the sides of the hood are able to be pulled up by the wind a bit (If I pull on either corner I'm able to lift it by hand up to an inch or so but I don't think the wind is getting it that high since its pulling on both sides at once). The factory latch also gives it about a 1/4" space to move too...

My thought was that the right hood pins would keep the corners of the hood from being lifted by the wind...

The pins would stop that from happening.  Adjust rubber bump stops up and hood pins down for a snug even fit.

No more lifting at highway speeds.  Mine work good on the highway with no lifting at 75+ anyways.

That sounds like the perfect solution. I think raising the rubber stops would help both me and Mopar Noob.  :grinyes:

Yup I ordered some pins today and got some nice new rubber stops (the old ones were weathered) so we will see how it goes.

Good luck guys, and take your time you don't want the rubber stops up too high!

Well everything turned out ok in the end with the first pin.... It actually took a lot of work because my hood is too curved and well beyond the max for this pin..

It got too late to do the 2nd one (the neighbors have sticks up their asses so I couldn't be out there cutting) so I'll do it later today.

That hood looks pretty cool.  Have you hopped up the motor, or is it more just for looks?  Either way I like it.  I think those pins also look a lot better than if you went with a normal E-body type pin.
