Ash trays in Challenger rear interior panels
« on: November 21, 2007 - 07:44:11 PM »
Don't know what was standard for the different years, but should 1970 Challenger "convertible" interior rear panels have ash trays at the bottom?  I have not seen this before until just recently in some pictures of panels that are being offered for sale.  I know that some years had ash trays for hard top versions.  Just don't know what's correct for 1970 convertibles.  Thanks.

70 E-body consoles had the "coin container" which was actually for holding the seat belt buckle.  71-on had the ash tray, probably because the seat belt holder was a total failure.
Sorry, I don't know about the rear ash trays by the back seat.  Seen them don't know which had them, which didn't.

I know the SE and Grand Coupe had ashtrays in the rear panels.  The 71 Challenger deluxe interior may have had them in the rear also. I don't know about 71 Barracuda/Cuda.

On 1970 Challengers, the rear ashtrays (and carpeted lower door panels) were part of the leather and cloth interior options.

The ashtrays are the same as the 71-up E-body console ashtray.  They are also the same as the A and B-body armrest ashtray.  I had them in my 78 Dodge van armrest also. Ebay is always a source for them used and reproduced.

Barry , I checked my 70 Cuda.  It came with the leather interior and it has the rear ashtrays also along with the overhead console.  I'm sure a cloth Cuda interior would have the same features.

My 71 Challenger convertible has the rear ashtrays.  It also is a deluxe interior car.  Would a standard interior Challenger convertible not have the rear ashtrays?

if I remember right, the console ashtray has a different shape that the A & B arm rest ashtrays? It seams like the armrest stlye are trapezoid and the console ones are rectangular when viewed from the top? Larger also....

I would be very surprised to see rear ashtrays in a 1970 convertble since they were not available with leather or cloth interiors. I have not specifically looked for vinyl seat cars with rear ash trays though. I will start keeping an eye out for it though.........

Do you have a broadcast sheet for the car? If so, the rear ashtrays will be noted.

I don't have a sheet for my 71 convertible.  I remember looking at it and wondering if I should keep it in 1979 when I changed out the seats. I wish I knew then what I know now.  :banghead: I tossed it along with the seats.  I did call a couple of 70 Challenger convertible owners I know.  They do not have the rear ashtrays.  I know of another 71 Challenger convertible owner that also has the deluxe interior and rear ashtrays. It seems that 70 cloth and leather interiors got the rear ashtrays.  71 cloth, leather and deluxe vinyl also have the rear ashtrays. The armrests do use the same ashtrays.  I just took this pic in a shed without electricity.  It should show enough.  The one ashtray has been painted black for who knows what reason but; they are the same.

I think it is from a late 70's , early 80's Dodge or Plymouth van.  I don't remember which B and A used them.  Maybe it was only the vans.  I'll have to look into it.

Do you have a BS?  If there is a 3 under C23, then rear ashtrays.

These ashtrays are not a Challenger or Cuda style.  They may be for full size Chrysler products. The Ebay ad doesn't list the Challenger either.
