I really hate asking this , but I can not get the key out .I bought my 70 (4 speed) Challenger about 25 years ago . It came in many boxes .I'm up to putting the battery in and can not get the key out . Is there a secret button or is my switch screwed up ? ???

Is there a lever on the column?  Near the dash.

Asuming the key is in the ignition and stuck, like Tom mentioned, look for a lever to depress to get the key out, although I doun't know if the '70 cars had that yet.  Try to wiggle the steering wheel left and right while turning the key.

No switch like that on my column but I did find a hole in the column between the key and the dash . I'll have to dig deeper tomorrow .

1970 4-speed cars are unique. They have a reverse lockout assembly. If the linkage is intact and working properly, you can only remove the key with the car in reverse.

I have a diagram some place, back in a bit......

Found it. Pull out your 1970 factory service manual, look on page 21-112, last paragraph. It references the diagram on the preceding page.

9it the column is not connected to anything , often the case , rotate the lower housing under the dash on the column , at one end the key will rotate back & release

Let me start by saying I work for DHL and with x mas I'm very busy for the next few weeks . That said a brief run down on my car . I bought it in pieces about 20+ years ago . The seller lied about everything But as I go I can put things together and come up with a story . Everything I know so far I would still do it again , yet I hate being "mislead".

The car had been in a ditch, it took out the drivers side fender , inner fender, door ( all replaced but not painted . NOS inner and outer fenders used door)  Now I'm thinking maybe the steering column was also lost and replaced with a automatic column . I'm thinking maybe he took off the gear options (p,r,n,d,l) and the shifter . An auto has to be in park to take the key out . I have a auto column out of my Cuda and by comparing the 2 hopefully I'll know Saturday . I'll let you guys know soon as I know . THANKS.  Over all things are going pretty good .
