Axle Size
« on: December 04, 2007 - 07:30:51 AM »
Well I decided I want to go with the 295 size tires and 15x10 inch rim set up on my challenger.  The only problem I have now is deciding whether to modify my current E body axle, or just buy a B body one.

I want the tires to sit center under the wheel wells and not jut out of the lip.  Which axle would be better for this set up?

I have 275-60-15 on 8" Dodge Steel wheels standard 4-1/2" BS. I can just get my hand, placed flat, between the fender and the outside of the tire. I would say you either have to play with rim backspacing /or spring relocation or narrower diff housing to get clerance in hard cornering with 295's on. Instead of playing with the widest I could get I went with a soft tire in the 275 size. I have about 3/4" clearance between the spring and the inner side of the tire. The tires are Dunlop GT Qualifier.

The b-body rear end will let you fit those tires on 10" wheels with a 5.5" backspacing after relocating your springs with a spring relocation kit from DR. Diff. It looks good!

Here is a pic of mine.  Notice all of the space between the fender and tire.

Using the B-body rear end keeps you from having to cut you spring perches off of your e-body rear end then welding them back on, because you might want to switch it back later,  like I did when I swapped everything over into another car.  Why modify a perfectly good e-body rear end?
