If you are going to go with a 268 Comp cam, I would refer you to their XE268.  It has slightly more dur at .050 plus a little more lift.  I have it in my 360 and it works great.

df2, I have that 309 cam in my engine now and it slowed my car down a bit. The rpm's are not there. But then again my heads are junk..
I was just messing around with different cams and will probably change it again over the winter.
Us old racing guys just like to mess around with stuff.
Hey,  I have nothing better to do if you know what I mean...
But seriously it's not a bad cam if your not going to race it....

Well this might sound dumb but I was really looking for a cam without a very high lift. Why, 2 reason,

1 my heads are very good, they are the MP high swirl newer heads with a 2.02 intakes. My little motor is just a .030 over 318.

2 nd I feel it might be easier  to break in and it may last longer and it will not stress the valve train as much.

Car has good gearing-3.91- and headers, seems like most cams today are gear to getting the most lift it can take.

I think Goody's got a combo like yours. I don't know what he's running for a cam.
Also the Torque Convertor will have an effect on what you want.
To me , that 309 wouldn't be bad. Are you planning on bracket racing it or just a few trips to the track during the year?

No racing, just driving. But I do live right by a nice 5 lane road and 1 stop light--oh the speed limit-70 mph

I am not sure what cam I have, I say that because I thought I have a  HE 268 comp cam that I gave my engine shop to put in but they already had a 214 / 224 @ .050 cam in it. They said they would swap it but now I wounder. My gas mileage has been stuck at 10 mpg since I been checking for over a year, never cared before. The HE 268 is to get good mileage, so thats why I thinking they might have not changed it for me, it was a half ass shop, what could I do. Had no internet and motor threw a rod right befor 9/11. Car was in the shop when everybody was bummed out over what just happen. Took them 6 weeks to do it. But I got 30,000 mile on it and just the oil pan leaks. That I have to do 1 day too but headers have to come out.

This is the cam I would pick from Engle

4456-H   K-56HYD   .504"
.504"   272°
272°   .336"
.336"   224°
224°   110°   $155.00

Just that .504 lift seems like too much too fast, I hate to wipe a lobe out breaking it in or even 2-4 years from now

Find out what the actual flow numbers are on your heads, and at what lift they have peak flow.  This is a good place to start when deciding on a cam.  Next, try to calculate your dynamic compression.  If you can get 8:1 dynamic or higher, you'll have an awesome street combo that should make a lot of torque.  Your right about not needing a high lift cam.  Try to match a cam up to your heads.  What trans do you have? What is your cruise rpm? What is the max rpm you want to turn the motor?

My 'Cuda has a huge purple cam in it.  My uncle found the 25 year old receipt a couple of weeks ago and found out that it is the 248/248 .508/.508 on a 108 LSA.  I have no idea what kind of pistons are in the motor, but the rotating assembly is forged, it has the big valve J heads on it that have been ported and polished, an old edelbrock 4BLD intake on it, and a 750 holley.  The car absolutely screams.  I have a 4 speed and a 4.10 gear though.  It loves 3,000-7,000 but doesn't like to be lugged around below 2,000.

Heads are already on, I did let Muscle Motors check them out and mill .030 off them. They redid the valve job and "hog bowl" them. Thats it, no other porting. Heads were 63cc and my cranking compression is 160psi cold, did not check hot yet.

They are the better high swirl heads, not the 308 with the air holes in the exhausts but the 4772576 MP heads that were cast or not drill air holes.

As for gearing, its got 3.91's with a 27" tall tire. A 904 trans with only a 1800 or so stall conv. but the low gear set, a 2.74 1st gear.

Its got a old Holley street domantor intake manifold and now a few diff carbs I could use, Carter and Holleys. Headers, Msd 7 box, the good stuff, well the 318 block isn't so great but its been holding up so far. Max rpms now is around 6200 no valve float just stops pulling good at around 5800-6000. It does have adj. rocker arms, should I lean towards a solid cam ? Comp makes a small 270, with just 224 @ .050 and .470 lift, then they have a 282 thats 236 @.050 and .494 lift but they say it needs a 2500 stall conv. and up to 10-1 compression, I am guessing my motor is 8.7 maybe 9-1.
