Need cam selection help!
« on: December 10, 2007 - 03:48:01 PM »
Hey guys, I'm building a 512 stroker using 440source's kit.  Plan on using a 84cc aluminum head which should put me right around 10:25 - 1 compression.  I'm putting this in my 74 'Cuda with a 833 4-speed tied to it and a 3:23 SG rear.  I want a pretty wild cam that will run good and turn heads at car shows & cruise nights.  Probably stick with hydraulic unless you have other ideas?

I pulled up a comp cam site that showed a 23-626-5 that has .562 lift & 300 duration at .02 tappet lift.  Is this too wild for my car?   :burnout:

If you can afford a solid roller setup go with that.. however your cam posted seems high in the duration for streetability but thats a high lift hydraulic for ya and the 3.23's will hurt as well.....

I would say the mopar solid .528 cam and add some 1.6 rockers to get .561 lift and you will also have 16* less duration  than your cam selection :2cents:

youo may not even be into the powerband at 70 MPH in 4th gear assuming you do not have the 833 OD  ,I would have to do the math but typically you will be around 2600 rpm & the cam probably will not be into the powerband until 3000
the 528 is a great choice with 1.6 rockers But may be too mild , I would be looking into a K58 or K 60 engle over any Comp grind

Its really helpful to talk with the tech guys at the cam manufacturers home office. I was going with a particular cam until the guy pointed out my compression ratio wasn't high enough for the cam I selected. You can't go wrong with lots of opinions from the manufacturers, as well as the smart guys on this website.

On my 72 Cuda with a 496 and 10.5 compression, I went with a Crower that is .625 lift, and 254/259 duration at .050. It's also a solid roller which idles great but makes great power. Rollers are the way to go. I only have to set valves once a year, and for the last two years they have barely needed adjustment. You get max power with a solid roller.

72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

Thanks for all the help!  What about carb?  I'm thinking I'm going to need at least 850cfm but may also option for a six pack.

I generally go with double the CI so I would be looking at a 950 Holley Hp series or Proform 950 carb
the 6 pack will cost you power

I thought I hear that solid rollers don't last on the street. Something about low rpms and lack of oil. The pin on the rollers gets beat up and breaks. Glad its working out for you.

The Engle 2358-H (K-58HYD) looks like a nice cam .520 lift & 230* @.050".  Would I be better off to run a 1.5 or 1.6 rocker @ .555 lift?

Wow, never heard that, but I will look into it. My solid roller setup has been going strong for 4 years now. Have a high output oil pump and I use synthetic oil, so that may be a plus. Even at idle I'm getting about 40 psi oil pressure.

As long as the springs are adequate to handle the ramp you can use either , I woudl suggest that the gains will be minimal without ported or aftermarket heads though

what you are talking about is the bronze gear on the distibutor will wear out over time....like any other part that can go bad on your motor also... they are like $65 bucks and probably should always have an extra one handy... :working:

Well how important is vacuum to you , are you using power brakes etc .
the 557 has long duration & overlap & makes awesome power 3000-7000+ rpm but is not street friendly

Chryco, I have power brakes.  Would the Engle 2358-H (K-58HYD) give me good vacuum for my brakes and have some good low end power as well?  Also what intake would you suggest for this combo?  Thanks for all the help! :worshippy

two opposites apply here , first you want a wild cam but you need vacuum & low end power
the K 58 should be ideal for what you are doing , I assume you wil be using headers , Engle can help you dial in exactly what specs to grind the cam at to match what you are doing ,
For street engine I really believe you need a milder cam with trong midrange to perform well
