Any four speed auto tansmissions?
« on: January 30, 2004 - 09:07:27 PM »
I know that Keisler makes that 5 speed replacement for E-Bodies, and I was wondering if anyone make an auto with OD for them.

Yeah, I did some searching on Google and found out about the 518. I didn't realize that it was only for small blocks though. Thanks for the info.

I use an A-518 tranny in my Cuda.   I got mine new from the Mopar catalogue.   My tranny has served me well for 3 years.  It is a good performer, but works much better with a shift kit.  I had a Transgo shift installed in my A-518 and it makes a world of difference for performance.   The car now feels much more like a sports car with the shift kit.

Most of the A-518s that came in production vehicles are electronic overdrive and electronic converter lock-up.  If you used one of these trannys, you would have to have one button for overdrive and one button for the torque converter to lock-up when you are in overdrive.   The tranny from the Mopar catalogue is an older A-518 that only requires one button for overdrive.   There is no need for a button to lock the converter.

you don't have to run a button to the Lockup on the newer 518s....they make relays and someother stuff that you can install that will lock\unlock the converter as your driving like it would in the regular vehicle...or you could just leave it like it is and don't worry about locking the converter.  I don't think you would have to have the converter locked.

What mods did you have to do to your floorpan to put the 518 in?

Yeah man!!  I was wondering how it went into an E-Body exactly.

I found this on the Hot Rod mag website, but its for a '70 GTX....

If i had to guess...no mods to floorpan...as the 518 is the 727 just with od...the pan and everything  on the 518 is like the old 727..but i could be wrong... :-\

I know the 518 is bigger in the tailhousing & needs floor mods to fit

I'm planning on putting in the A-500. When built right, it's plenty strong for a small-block. I talked with someone who swapped in a 518. The big thing was fabbing up a new crossmember that drops the mounting pad about 1". This was done instead of modifying the floorpan. In all, he indicated that some fabrication was required but it wasn't all that bad.

1974Cuda360, what type of shifter do you use with your A-518?

Rusty,

On my Cuda, the A-518 uses the factory slap stick floor shifter.     You will have to do a few modifications to the linkage to get everything to work correctly, but the changes are easy kind of self explanatory.     The main change is to a shifter linkage bracket that is mounted to the 727 that will not bolt to the A-518.    You just need to modify this bracket to mount to the A-518 and everything will fall into place.

O.K. thanks, just thought it might not work with the slap stick cause I was looking at smr trans and their web page said it wouldnt work with the oem slapstick. They must have meant, not without mods.
