Welding new rear quarter panel
« on: December 12, 2007 - 11:17:56 AM »
I am ready to fit my new rear quarter panel on the car, and i was thinking that it would be simpler and easier to weld it on if i had Pre-drilled holes around the outside lip. Am i heading the right direction? This is the first one i have ever done and i want to make sure i get it right.

Pre drilling the hole will make it easier, but be sure to not place the weld holes in the area of the wheel molding screws if you are going with moldings. If you have the original panel you can lay it on top of the new one to mark the original location for the welds.

I also have found that a #3 center drill works very well since the body diameter is 1/4" and it leaves very little or a burr.

Like fram boy suggested predrill all the holes in the factory locations or as close to them as you can.

Also - make sure you either use Cleco temporary rivets or (if not available) self tapping srews to hold the quarter in place whilst welding it. Ensures the best gaps between doors and trunk lid. Remove the screws or Clecos when done and fill the holes with weld.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I also have to weld in the dutchman panel, so it will take a lot of fitting and checking along the way. I have a bunch of self-tapping srews left over from when i did the driver floor pan.

I'll be getting my new quarter panel very soon. My car is on the rotisserie. Since I already welded in the sub frame connectors, I guess it really doesn't matter anymore to have it on jack stands to install. What do you think?
