How Many Really Good E-Bodies Did you pass up back in the day?
« on: December 14, 2007 - 04:01:06 PM »
I was just wondering if there was anyone else like me that has passed up some really good e-bodies in there day?  I know I have passed up some just because I did not like the color.  And if I knew then what I know now I would have bought them just for an investment.  I pass up a 70 Hemi Cuda, AAR, among a few cars.

The one I have is the first one I ever remember seeing in person.  It was originally sold to someone else first, but when they returned it (something about it being unsafe - suspension wore out), I was able to pick it up.  Have had it for about 12 years now.  If they know it would be worth the price they are today, I am sure they would have kept it.

I have seem others along the way, but never really thought about buying another until recently.

The thing is, "What constitutes a really good e-body?" Prices have jumped, and times has taken its toll, compared to when I first bought my car.  I came close to buying a very nice white TA for something like $10k in the early 80s and decided it was too much.  Obviously that same car at that same price would be a killer bargain today.

I've said somewhere else that I think I threw away what would today be about $100,000 worth of parts and cars.  Around 1980 I bought a numbers 440 70 Challenger as a parts car with a friend, and once the motor was out of the car we couldn't find a buyer for it.  It was solid, no rust, straight, complete interior, needed a paint job.  We finally had to have a junk yard tow it after it had been in his girlfriend's mother's driveway for a month.

71 Challenger vert in 86 for 1,250, running car
71 Barracuda vert in 87 for 450, running car
Those two hurt the most but there are a bunch of others that were even nicer. Was way too easy to buy a really nice car for under a grand in the mid 80's. I foolishly thought it would always be like that. Bad thing is when you are a teenager you have lots of time to find the cars but not much money to buy them  :pullinghair:

The Hemi was a 1970 Panther Pink.  It was pink all over top to bottom and front to back.  It only had baby moon hub caps that were chrome everything else was pink.  I think it was 1974 or 75 when I could have bought it for $500.00 and drove it home.  I did not like the color at the time so I passed it up.  Then in 1983 I passed up an AAR cuda for $1500.00 at that time I really did not want to have one of those either.  O well some good ones have got away.

Apparently my mom passed up a 70 Challenger back in the day. She wishes she hadn't.

Passed up on a TA for $4500 in about '82.  It wasn't practical for a year round car.

In the mid 80's I passed on an original Challenger RT/SE with a 440 for under 4 grand because I wanted a 4 speed, and a real AAR cuda because I wasn't into the small block cars.  Also passed on a 69 Charger 500 because I wanted the hidden headlights.

I passed up a 74 Barracuda that someone put a 440 in, back before i bought my car. the guy wanted $3500 and it really didnt need much, i had been riding around with alot of cash in my pocket. i waited and finally found my Challenger for $2500. im quite happy with my choice, but i kinda wouldnt mind having another to play with....

Passed up a cream puff 383 70 vert Cuda back in late 80's for 3-4K. But even then 3-4K is like 10-12 K today I would imagine.

Oh man I just remembered this one. A guy in Rio Rancho had a 70 Challenger R/T in his garage that he was selling for 3500 bucks in the mid 90's. I was burnt out at that time and never even went to go look at it. It was a 383 but they had a 440 in it and it was a quarter miler. The original engine went with it and was brand new, was pulled when they bought it. The car had less than 5k miles on it. My brother in law said he had never seen a car that looked that nice. Original paint was immaculate, FE5 red. Interior was perfect, the glass was not even scratched. The thing that I remember turning me off on it was the inner fenders were cut out for fender well headers. I could kick myself for not getting that one  :swear:

I passed on a 70 AAR Cuda in 1991 for $4,000.00. Could of bought a plum crazy 70 Challenger RT vert in 76 for $150.00 an it ended up at the junk yard. To many others and I could of bought a non e-body Superbird that was mint in 1984 for $6,000.00 but that was lots of money back then.

Called about a complete TX9 AAR in the autotrader for  $5500 back in 2000, estate sale and it was available, but I was in school, had no money and it was 1000km away.  :banghead:
