Automatic Transmission up grades?
« on: December 16, 2007 - 10:24:21 AM »
I would like some input on automatic transmissions that I could put behind my small block that would be either a 4 speed or more.  Any suggestions to a trans that would be good?
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

I think the A518 overdrive Mopar box would be a good choice behind a Small Block Mopar.  I am thinking of doing the same conversion behind a very mild 360 in my Desoto Panel truck.  :2thumbs:

Yup,the 518 will fill the bill for anything you want done. I am going to put one in my Chally next year and will make a thread on it.  :2thumbs:

That was what I was thinking about doing.  Just was not sure what all had to be done.  I will be looking forward to your thread.

As Strong or stronger than the 727.   I want the fuel mileage increase that will come from it.

An adapter bellhousing for starts. (the 518 did not come with a big block bell housing) There is a thread on it here in the past if you look in the old thread pages.(the pics are probably gone thought)  :faint:

Stay away from Gear Vendors. Splitting gears is a gimmick and not how they make it out" FAST RACE LIKE CLUTCHLESS SHIFTS!!!!!! 6-SPEED SEMI AUTO!!!!!!!!!" Bloody BS. The stock system maybe OK but the new autoshift is definitely having troubles and not a good idea to purchase just yet. I've waited over 2 years and it's still not working. >:( If you think I'm joking, there'll be a 15+ page thread somewhere in this section LMAO. The stock GV unit from what I have heard is fine but it's harder to use and in reality offers nothing over a A518 except for more $$$$. Does the same thing. If you have a non-#s transmission go the A518 or a manual.

Thanks for the adavice.  I have been reading the other thread also.  Seems there are some problems.  But I have been thinking of the A518 for a couple of years now.  I do not have a numbers matching trans so it will be the 518.

I forget, but i think i just Google or Yahoo A518 conversion for a detailed layout of parts needed to suite each type of box for the conversion on to older style smallblock.   Lock-up compared to Non Lock-up.

I have found at least one good web site on conversion.  I was working as in instructor at an automotive school and I had one of the A518 and told the students that is what I want in my car.  That was 2 1/2 years ago and one of these days that is what I will do.  I had one of the lock up and one that was not.  I think either one could be modified to work.  I will be trying to come up with a plan on doing either one.  I think it will be worth the effort in gained fuel mileage.

I went with a non lock up 518,they are hard to find because they were only common in '90 and '91 trucks and vans. If you go with a non lock up ,you can use the same stall converter as a 727 so you are unlimited. If you are not going to go with a higher stall converter, then a lock up will do fine and it will drop your RPM's about another 300 RPM's when the converter clutch locks up. :2thumbs:
