Speedometer woes

Hey everyone, I can't troubleshoot this at the moment because the Cuda is at a friends house hibernating for the winter. However, when spring rolls around I will need to fix a problem I have with my speedometer. Ever since I have had the car,  the speedometer needle will fling itself back and forth all around the dial. It has done it hard enough that the needle is actually bent at a 45 degree angle now. Obviously I need a new gauge because of the bent needle, but I need to know what caused this in the first place. Was it a bad guage, bad cable, or what? Anyone know? I don't want to install a new gauge and have the same symptom.     Bear

If you have Ralley gauges a stick on needle is available at http://rt-eng.com/mediawiki/index.php/RTE_E_Body_Rallye_Speedo_Needle
if standard gauges then a used replacement speedo would make sense.
