« on: December 21, 2007 - 01:20:07 PM »
Who make the best, or from whom to you prefer to purchase:

Crankshafts

Camshafts & Lifters

Gaskets

Pushrods

Rockers

Alternators (not necessarily factory output)

Ignition Modules

Coils

Water Pumps

Distributors

Valve Springs

Pistons

Just to start with a few...

And in case you're wondering, pretend that you're shopping for a 440, aiming for 500-600hp, streetable, automatic, not for drag - a.k.a. "Cruizer."...

For what type of application? All out race in a super class, dedicated bracket racer, street/strip car, crusier, show pony, FAST class. Force induction? Using what type of fuel?

It is hard to answer if you do not tell what you are really looking for in the products.  Stock or Racing?  What are you wanting to do?
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

What's the best? How much money you got?
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

Who make the best, or from whom to you prefer to purchase:

Crankshafts - for mild applications 440 Source , the crank will easily clear inside the block unlike Eagle

Camshafts & Lifters I yuse a lot of Lunati & Engle , most are custom grinds though

Gaskets - FelPro for most , or Cometic for alum heads

Pushrods- Smith Bros

Rockers Depends , I often use Crane Ductile iron or Comp Pro magnum rollers

Alternators (not necessarily factory output), Local rebuilder

Ignition Modules  -Mopar Chrome , Crane Hi6 , Mallory , FBO actually has a good box too

Coils -Usually MSD BLaster or Pertronics for stock look

Water Pumps , Depends what type

Distributors - often Mopar Performance , The MSD is very adjustable too for more $$

Valve Springs - depends ont he application

Pistons - Depends , Speed Pro makes a great stock weight repalcement , Ross , JE , 440 Source , Diamond all have a good product

Just to start with a few...

And in case you're wondering, pretend that you're shopping for a 440, aiming for 500-600hp, streetable, automatic, not for drag - a.k.a. "Cruizer."...

I know this goes against the grain but I am not sold on MSD , the rev limiter for the older [non digital] boxes requires chips instead of dials to adjust & the chips are not cheap, also the MSD is twice the price of the others , I have had numerous MSDs fail as well
Jacobs seems to have a good system as well

I've used the stock set up with chrome box, Jacobs Pro Street and MSD 6AL and Digital 6. I can't say I've seen a huge advantage of one system over the others in a dual purpose vehicle. The Digital 6 is nice because of all the extra features it has such as two step rev limit, start retard, and so forth. But other wise, I can't say I've seen big differences in power, performance, or mileage between them.

There are some guys in my local club who are really sold on the Crane stuff. They say it works as good as MSD and is a lot less money.

Summit has a  line of ignition products that also looks pretty nice. I'm sure they are just rebranded major manufactuer items, but their package set up gets an ingition box, distributor and coil for a couple hundred bucks. It is basically buy a system, get the coil free.

If you ever want to overload you brain with technical information, get the book "Optimizing your Ignition" by Dr. Jacobs. It contains loads more info on ignition systems than you would ever think you need.

Who make the best, or from whom to you prefer to purchase:

Crankshafts - Depends on application. I've used MP, 440Source, K1, Scat, and Callies

Camshafts & Lifters - I prefer catalog grinds from Comp Cams or Crane, customs from Engle (thanks CP!)

Gaskets - Felpro, Victor, Cometic, Mr Gasket, again depends on what I'm sealing

Pushrods - Who ever has a set that fits... Comp, Crane, Smith Brothers

Rockers - MP, Isky, Crane, Harland Sharp, T&D

Alternators (not necessarily factory output) - Powermaster one wires, or Car Quest reman factory types...lol

Ignition Modules - Standard Ignition

Coils - MSD, Mallory

Water Pumps - Milodon, Airtex

Distributors - MSD, MP

Valve Springs - Matched to camshaft. Comp Cams or Crane

Pistons - Diamond Forged, KB - depends on application

Just to start with a few...

And in case you're wondering, pretend that you're shopping for a 440, aiming for 500-600hp, streetable, automatic, not for drag - a.k.a. "Cruizer."...

Anyone else have any input on this?

I somehow left off intake manifolds too, but I think I might have that one figured out...
