CAI Or Similar?

This is a dumb question but is there something out there that increases air flow dramatically like a CAI? If heard Dad's SRT8 and recently put one in my Jeep and the sound inside the car is drastically improved. Just sounds awesome, plus it has better response and better performance, albeit 5-10hp.

I'm sure the factory air cleaner is very restricting, yes? no? I'm guessing the only "CAI" available for our cars is by removing the factory air cleaner (like Lucy has) and putting a bigger air filter on with just a top lid (like Dad's Cuda, 2nd photo)? If that is the only way, was sound inside the car increased?

Carl,

Back in the day, we used to take the lid off and flip it over on the stock unit.  Might need a longer carb center stud, but maybe not.  Try it and see.  If it is flippable, it will leave about an inch to an inch and a half open space all the way around the filter housing.  Sounds awesome, allows more air flow, the air remains filtered, and you keep all the stock components.  To put it back 100% stock, just flip the lid back over......     :2thumbs:

Thanks Oldschool, now, I'm a little confused, which part am I flipping? lol
Filter, air cleaner housing or something else? Sorry, I'm half drunk and not up to play lol.  :P

Just remove the stock filter housing lid and flip it over, re-install it upside down.  Try it, you'll like it....     :2thumbs:

Check for hood clearance, also make sure tha block off plates are removed from the hood scoops

Block off plates? Wouldn't that just send all kinds of dust and junk into the engine bay?
It'd be a mess within the first hundred miles would it not. :clueless:

  Flipping the top air cleaner lid makes a great sound,    :burnout:   however I am not a fan as it allows hot under hood air into the motor. I would prefer the cooler air from outside, more dense, more H.P.  It is an old trick that many did in the 60's & 70's so it sounded better inside the cabin area.   :2thumbs:

   What do you think I go thru with my hood scoop?   :lol:  As was suggested, flipping over the air-cleaner lid will give you more air-flow. I would suggest turning it back over at a car show though, because it looks a little stupid upside down.  :grinyes: I've been told forcing the cooler outside air into your carb is like getting free horsepower.

I've got the K&N assembly, but I think Carl would prefer to stay with the stock look.

   Yea flipping the lid looks bad & will ruin the finish on the topside eventually... don't ask me how I know... I get the same effect with the open element box off a '68 383 a friend gave me, new chrome units avail from MP. We used to call it the sound of a thousand alternate lifestyle males sucking at once.

Thanks guys, I may do some research on some set ups. I'm after better sound inside the car and a little more hp without "ruining" the stock image. I think doing what you have Mike is fine as it's something they would have done back in the day, "nostalgia correct" is something I like to do and don't mind doing if not, then stock is preferred for Lucy anyhow. Ps: Mike, got any photos of your system on and any part #'s? Also, will the system on Dad's Cuda engine above in my first post make a dramatic change in interior noise?
