Carl,

I have a K&N air filter assembly, model #KNN-66-3040. I bought mine thru Summit Racing. Mine has a 1 1/4" drop base to fit it under the flat hood that I have. If you have a Rally hood, then maybe you won't need the drop-base. It's a matter of taste. No drop-base just means the assembly sits a little higher off the engine. They have different lids for the top too. Since I took this pic, I have switched to a chrome lid instead of the red. As far as the noise goes, it really is only apparent when you get on it. After the engine levels off, I can only hear the exhaust.

I have a K&N Setup like MEK, with the AAR hood it gets plenty cold air! I think you're in a need of a shaker!

I just have to cut out the opening for my hoodscoop a little more. The 14" air cleaner lid is just a bit too wide right now. I can thank some previous owner/idiot for this.  :pullinghair:

I have a K&N on mine. I don't know if it sounds better or makes more power since I bought it like this.

I was a bit unclear in my post, I meant that Carl needs a Shaker! MEK, you got the T/A hood right?

...Well, a six-pack scoop planted on an original Challenger flat hood. It just needs a bigger cutout under the scoop.   :working:

Carl - if Lucy needs this cleaner then you are limited if you want to keep the #'s setup air cleaner. For your 540 monster you are building you might want to look at that dual snorkel setup made of kevlar produced in Ontario Canada by Air Inlet Systems. Don't know if that fits your injection setup though. Looks like they take the inlets out into the frontal area to get the most cool charge. Lots of cold air = more performance (and of course) more fuel consumed.  www.ramairbox.com

Okay help me out...  How the heck does flipping over the air cleaner cover IMPROVE airflow??

My air cleaner is domed upwards on the top - like most others I've seen.  Therefore, flipping it would create a SMALLER cavity INSIDE the air cleaner.  This would do nothing to change the amount of surface area of the filter itself, and since most air cleaners also curve upwards on the BOTTOM plate, I would think that this would pinch the air flow coming into the top of the carb, and actually REDUCE air flow into the engine.

Cold air intakes - CAI's - perform two primary functions.  They reduce the air baffles and kinks from the air inlet - these are installed by the manufacturer to REDUCE engine noise because MOST customer don't want that sound.  This creates smoother air flow, and more sound.  They also usually move the air inlet towards the bottom of the car to scavenge the cooler air that is flowing underneath your car.  Some "tuners" even go as far as to remove fog lamps or cut holes into their bumpers to allow air flow to enter directly towards the filter.

Obviously this doesn't work on our cars because the air cleaner - the air inlet - sits directly atop our motors.  The best way to increase air flow is - as Chrycho mentioned - to remove the covers for the fake air scoops in most of our hoods.  My dad did that to his 'Cuda - drilled a bunch of holes into the scoops.  Others remove them entirely and add screens to keep leaves out and such.

I'm gonna go on record for saying that flipping your air cleaner lid does probably exactly opposite of what you want it to do.  If that were the true "high performance option," I'd think that they'd have started BUILDING them "upside down" already.

witht the stock air cleaner the top lid is sealed to the edge of the lower body of the air cleanerf orcing all the air through the snorkles to get to the filter so flipping the lid allows air betweent he body & lid imporving air flow , with an open element flipping the lid will nto help at all but using a system to bring colder air in from the front of the car can help

Jeff,

If you flip the lid of the air cleaner over, then suddenly the outside of the filter is open to pull in air from 360*. In a stock setup, the air cleaner can only get air from one or two snorkels, thus the restriction in airflow.

Oh oh ohoh...

I have a more modern set-up then I guess - just an all-open, 360 filter element.  Yes I do remember the snorkel setups - that's what my dad's 340 had.  I honestly can't remember what that looked like, so I can't picture it, but now I realize the difference between what I'm thinking and what you're talking about.

Pardon me whilst I remove myself from this conversation then.  :)

it would get cooler air but I bet it is still 3" tall above the carb

here is my junkyard setup. about $15 worth of stuff there. i didnt cut anything or have the talent to fabricate, so i used factory parts. if someone had the know-how they could easily make something ram air functional.

felt a slight difference in my car at highway speeds with this one.
