You wanna back the timing off to like 30* to use the spray i've been told....And msd has an adjustable switch to adjust timing from inside the car... however if you dont have the adjuster is it good to run around with 30* timing all the time??? Im sure there is power loss but is it safe.... thx

I run my timing at 30 total and do not have any problems. I have heard that it may raise your engine temp a little by decreasing the timing, but it should be fine.

Also I have heard that you need to back the timing down about 2 degrees for every 50hp of spray you plan to run.

maybe others will chime in.... I run 36* now and I spray a 200shot...I should drop it to 28*......

The 5.0 stang boys here in town run 28* with a 200 shot....

I would not run 36 degrees with a 200 shot. if you don't have a way to back it off when you are on the nitrous you need to run the lower timing all the time. Running 30 degrees off the bottle won't hurt anything. You should be able to get some kind of retard box so you can have full timing off the bottle and the correct retarded timing when spraying. back in the day you could run a lean burn distributor that had dual pickups in it. One set was standard timing and the other was a few degrees off. Flip a switch (or a throttle microswitch, or hook it in to the nitrous solenoids) and you had a cheap retard system. Don't know if you can retrofit those old internals into a RB distributor, probably not worth it anymore as the MSD boxes are fairly cheap and plentiful. Have someone show you what to look for on your spark plugs after a run. You can learn a lot more than just if your motor is rich or lean, look for signs of detonation, correct heat range of plug, etc. Good luck

I got a MSD 6 digital,- it got the retard, and rpm limiter for both max. rpm, and transbrake, and some more I think..
Don't know if you got to have a MSD distr. to run it...

Generally, the rule is 2� for every 100hp. But really, the bigger kits will like even less than that. The total amount you start from means little. If the car runs well at 36, take 4 out for 200hp kits. If it runs well at 42, take 4 out. Don't confuse mustang engines with yours. They are much different in terms of burn. You will want more than they typically run for the same sized system. Spark plug gap and ignition get rather important once you get past 250hp too, as does cylinder to cylinder distribution.

I also read ring gap is important as well.... So really dont spray more than 250

without getting to technical....

I hear that dual plane intakes are not too good either. A single plane has better distribution. With a dual plane a few cylinders will be too lean.

A old Holley Street Dominator is a good pick from a dual plane if you need low end power, sells all the time on E-bay

I have the MSD timing retard "dial" on my car. It works great (if you remember to turn it back and forth as needed)

When you turn the advance down,the idle slows down,when you turn the advance back up,the idle speeds back up. It's kind of cool in that respect when your friends are standing around while it's running.
I use to have a note taped to my dash when I was at the track that said "retard timing"
The engine will run better off the juice with it advanced normally. Your Digital 6 will do it with the high speed retard. No you don't have to have a MSD distributor.

On my tunnel ram intake that I was using with the NOS,cylinder #8 was always lean.

I have a couple of videos of my '73 doing some nitrous runs,I have been working on getting them converted and on the internet to post them here.

If I recall correctly (it's been over 4 years since the car was running) I had the timing at about 36 degrees total and the dial at zero. When I was going to do a NOS run,I turned it up and took 6 degrees out of it. (with a 250 horse Cheater dual plate kit)

The red box by the coil is the retard box.

Or am I thinking backwards on the pic I put up of the msd unit... set your timing at 28* roughy and advance the dial cause it says advance!!!

like move it to 8* and you have 36*

Yes,you are correct!

I had it on 5 or 6 and then moved it to zero when I was going to do a NOS run. Sorry,like I said,it has been awhile since I had the car running.
