another rearend question....

I have the possibility of getting a suregrip (wheels spin opposite direction) out of a 73 roadrunner. Can I take that rearend and put it in my Challenger, or do I have to just take the 3rd member out and swap them? I too, do not know much about rearends (insert pun).

the sure grip will rotate both tires in the same direction , if they are opposite it is not a sure grip
the whole carrier can be swapped if both are 8 3/4 or the sure grip alone can be swapped into your gearset again if both are 8 3/4 " diffs

Thanks....I was reading the other forum about rearends and I was more confused after I was done. All I really needed to know was if it is a sure-grip, do the tires rotate the same direction or opposite. And the answer is the same direction.

Well I guess I am confused again. Here is a direct quote from the seller: "when I spin the drive shaft yoke both spin the same way but when I spin the axle the other one goes inthe opposite direction."
So would this be limted slip or open?

Your diff is an open center diff.
When turning a wheel the other wheel will turn in the same direction for a limited diff center.

with any sure grip turning 1 wheel the other has to go the same rotation , if it goes opposite it is open

Ok thank you. I now understand. My next question is, what is better or stronger, the clutch or cone style limited diff?

I'll only add to the sure grip note on spinning the tires by hand "unless it's already destroyed...". If the grip is shot, it behaves like an open differential.

no , the cones type will bottom out & have virtually no resisitance left , however might as well treat it as a open as there is no way to repair a worn out cone type , you just throw them away

I know guys who have done some kind of welding to build something up on cone style sure grips and they have worked. Do not know how long for as i have not kept in touch for a long time.

you can machine .100 or more off the end of the cones & add shims to the springs to try to extend the life of the cone style , how well it works is up to debate I guess

I have the possiblity of getting a cone style that is 20 miles from my house (no shipping) for just over $400. It has 3.91 gears and rotates good, and the teeth are perfect. It also has a 742 case. Which case is better, the 742 or the 489?
