I used to run M/T valve covers painted like that.  Pretty easy to do, just tape off the areas outside the ribbed section.  Then spray the ribbed area and let it dry so it is no longer tacky.  Finally, stretch an old diaper dampened with solvent tightly over a sanding block, and carefully wipe off the tops of the ribs.  You might need to do a little finesse work with a Q tip moistened with solvent, but it is really pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

Looks like blue silicone squeezed out around the thermostat housing.

My guess is a homemade rubber gasket.   :clueless:

Thinking about going to the black wrinkle ones (car is white w/black).  I did the orange to match the block which, of course, you can't see.

Looks nice, I think Redline did this, but I forget just what procedures he went through. It seems like a project that would require a lot of time. But the out come when done right is   :2thumbs:  knockout.  I'm wondering if using a sponge applicator or Q-tip, if ya put a layer of say vasiline on the ribs then usung a low pressure gun paint the cover. When dried the vasiline should wipe off with any paint residue upon it ? ?

Its easy to do, I did mine by spraying then wiping off the raised areas. However, I took it a step further as I wanted to preserve the polished finish and clear powder coated the entire assembly. I wanted to do the same with the MP cast air cleaner lid but the metal they use to cast those is not as high a grade as the valve covers and will not polish up tothe same finish. I had mine vacuum plated, and then carefully masked off the raised ribs and lettering before painting. Its holding up very well and looks very similar to the finish on the valve covers now.

For the final touch, I dyed the white air cleaner element purple.  :2thumbs:

in the case of the MP cast air cleaner, you don't. Its made of a lower grade metal and doesn't polish up to the same microfinish as the valve covers. I considered chrome but it would be too shiny and wouldn't match the valve covers. I had it vacuum plated. It has since dulled down some and matches the valve covers nicely.
