Electric Water Pump HP Results
« on: December 30, 2007 - 09:34:40 AM »
This dyno test was done on a small block chevy...and using March Underdrive pulleys...

AVG  402 335    406 338      4 3          409 341            3  3

We will use 6000 RPM as the example...

March Pulleys made a gain of 3 TQ and 4 HP over Overdrive pulleys
Electric Water pump made a gain of  8 TQ and 8 HP over March pulleys
Electric Water pumps made a gain of  11 TQ an 12 HP over Overdrive pulleys!!!

AVG gain across the board...
March Pulleys made a gain of 4 TQ and 3 HP over Overdrive pulleys
Electric Water pump made a gain of  3 TQ and 3 HP over March pulleys
Electric Water pumps made a gain of  7 TQ an 6 HP over Overdrive pulleys!!!

You gain appx 5HP going from stock to March Pulleys on a small block!!!

Basically an electric water pump is most effective at high rpm and the gains are small at street cruising!!
Im sure the numbers go up some with a BB Mopar and people who go the track will benefit from the HP Gain at High RPM..
Also Mechanical pumps flow about twice as much as an electric pump.. I am curious how my 499 will run on the street cause of this because it dont run hot now during summer driving! I imagine the electric fans will come on more from my Be Cool setup to keep temps down???

We will soon see!!! Im gonna keep around my March Pulley and mechanical waterpump for insurance....

Some Comments I found on the Meziere pump by users... ???

The ad for this pump states that it is suitable for street use, and is rated at 2500 hours. I figured that if I drove the car for 2  hours a day, every day for a year, it would last  for over 3.4 years at that rate. That's longer then my factory pump lasted! That's good enough for me. I'll just proactively replace it every 4 to 5 years along with the OptiSpark. (I don't drive my car 2 hours every day of the year.)

All I can say is I absolutely love this pump. At the time of this writing, I've been driving the car around in 100+ degree heat for the last week with the air on high, in stop-n-go traffic, and the engine has yet to get above 190 degrees. (I have the Hypertech 160 degree thermostat installed.) It also provides a noticeable seat-of-the-pants improvement in horsepower, particularly on the top end. Later on I'll rig the fans and the pump so that I can turn them both on without the engine running for some extra cooling at the track. That will be really nice!

Here's a Dyno run that was performed by Morgan MotorSports showing what you should expect from the Meziere Water Pump installation, horsepower-wise. This graph shows about 9.6rwhp gain and 10.7rwtq gain from the install. The faster you turn your motor, the more benefit you receive. It's not a huge amount, but this HP is in addition to the fact that your engine is going to run so much cooler. This really wasn't a HP mod so much as it is a cooling mod. But, every little bit helps!

Re: Electric water pump on strret use

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Been using a Meziere 35 gpm electric pump and two 14" Spal fans on my 540 ci, 649 hp Chevelle for about 10 years now with no worries in the Southeast Texas heat. The only problem I had was when a piece of the lower rad hose spring corroded and broke off, lodging in the pump impeller. Things got hot real quick. I took the rest of the spring out. No problem with hose collapse.

Alternator and power steering pump mounting is an issue with the electric pumps, but March has that covered now.

Just a little insight as Electric seems to be a hot ticket these days!!... im sure there are people who had bad experinces... I guees like everything in life ...

I will post all my experinces at the end of summer as I have the meziere 40-45GPM unit... or sooner  :scared:  :2thumbs:

But, I think we would have to admit, that in stop and go traffic, getting max coolant pump flow at idle is a definite advantage. That may be worth the price of an electric coolant pump all by itself?
