You have to admire what Walter Payton did playing on a team that had alot of bad years. Jim Brown was a man playing among boys. I believe he averaged over 5 yards a carry. He kind of made a boo-boo when he retired early thinking he would become a great actor.

All I have to say is if Walter Payton and Barry Sanders  played on a good quality team their whole career the would have way higher rushing yards than Emmit....

i think walter payton and jim brown are clearly head and shoulders above the rest.  barry sanders would be the most exciting back of all time with his ability to take it to the house on any given snap but barry was sorta one dimensional in that respect. feast or famine.  ill never forget his minus 13 yards or whatever it was in an entire playoff game against the packers.  when it was 3rd and goal at the one barry sanders was watching from the sidelines.

I, too, selected Sweetness.  However, for the second back I decided to look at fullbacks (as I believe you need one of each in your backfield) with toughness being the major caveat for my vote.  To me that belongs to Larry Csonka.  I watched him literally run over defensive backs who got in his way, and to this day he is still the only offensive player to be flagged for unnecessary roughness while carrying the ball!

What a tough backfield they would be together.

I was lucky to watch Eric D*ckerson play in LA and IMHO he was unstoppable, I'll never forget a game in '85 against the St. Louis Cardinals (ironic) in which he had 105 yds in his first 5 carries! Walter Payton was great and like Barry Sanders, a slasher with awsome moves, but as a straight-up runner, D*ckerson takes it.

I love Barry, Payton was great too and I am a Dallas fan so Smith is one of the greatest but there was not one before and will never be another like Jim Brown.

Gotta give the nod to Jim Brown.  Being old enough to have seen all of the players on the list, he stands heads above the rest.  Too bad football wasn't even his best sport.  Anyone here ever see Marion Motley play ?  Having to share the scoring with Otto Grahm, When the AAFC shut down in 1950, Motley was the league's career rushing leader at 3,024 yards ( 4 years ).  He was almost as good as Brown and played linebacker and pass blocked at the same time, probably why he had a shorter career.

I was bummed when Barry Sanders retired. He had so much left in him still. He was so fun to watch play.
