70 challenger console question
« on: December 31, 2007 - 07:30:59 PM »
I have a question on the console for my 70 Challenger. It seems the 70 console is different from the later years, correct? On the 70, is there some kind of removable insert the ashtray fits into? I must be missing this piece, because the ashtray I have is far too small for the opening. I am somewhat concerned as I have never seen this piece for sale seperately.

The back end of the 70 console only is for seatbelt holders no ashtray

Yes,

The 70 console was a different breed. That back slot held seat belts for the front passengers.

As a side note, this makes the 70 console worth more.   :money:  Since I didn't have the seat belts, I sold my 70 console and bought a later year console in better shape and made a profit.  :naughty:

So, the little compartment just holds the female buckles? I never would have figured that out!

Don't feel bad, I originally thought that slot was for an 8-track tape.   :smilielol:   :smilielol:

 :clueless: Hey Clown, Not sure.

Is it a four speed consul or automatic consul.  :drunk:

It's tough to tell from this angle. The bottom one is definitely an automatic. Given they all have ashtray provisions, the top one SHOULD have that 5th screw hole by the shifter. I'm sure it would be like that if it were an auto or 4-speed.   :clueless:  :clueless:  :clueless:

The screw by the shifter was started sometime mid 71. It was added to stop the console plate from rattling and making a buzzing sound.

That bottom one looks like a 4speed console with that piece cut out of the side to clear the shifter.
