No starting with the key.....
« on: January 01, 2008 - 05:13:35 PM »
Big day today, fired the newly rebuilt 371ci motor in my '72 Cuda.....its finally running after sitting for 25 years (I've had it 6 months). All went well, no major problems but cant get it to turn over with the key switch, HOWEVER, IT WILL TURN THE MOTOR OFF. I pulled the ballast resister and it appears to be powered on both sides when the key is turned. Next looked at the solinoid relay and the power is there, but I cant tell if its getting to the ignition switch. I have an old one that I plan to try, but here is my other MAJOR concern:
I do not have a neutral safety switch hooked up. There were no wires hanging around for it. I do have the 3 prong plug on the tranny, just no wires/plug. I believe it runs to the bulkhead. Could this be the reason the switch is not working? If so, can I get a neutral switch locally that I can hook up. Originality is not an issue here.

MANY THANKS TO ALL THAT HAVE HELPED ME OUT!!!!!

Going to celebrate tonight at the OUTBACK.

George

That may be your problem, I had a bad connector & had to keep playing with the plug at the tranny to get it to start from the key.
that harness I think also has two wires that go over to the starter relay, if you have a/c some of that wiring is there too.
I got a 3prong switch with a short repair harness(just the plug & 6" of wire) off ebay pretty cheap, actually lookin for another for the other car, once they dry up they are a bugger to keep them in place on the tranny.
I can shoot a pic of the harness if you need it I have the other cars out. Rich.

Yes you need to ahve the 3 pin neutral safetly switch plugged in for the start realy to function , there should be a 4 pin connecter that will plug into the bulk head on the firewall to connect the harness for the tranny [3 pin plug]

I just found that there were 2 wires coming out of the bulkhead that I had thought were AC wires and just bundled up. They are blue and green. I had marked the blue one as AC for sure, but didnt realize there was also a green one. Could one of these be to my neutral safety switch on the trans which I think is keeping the key from starting the motor?

Where can I get a 3 prong plug in for the switch on the tranny locally? And then find a 4 pole connector for the bulkhead? Can I jump that connection until I find one?

I think I just found it (thanks you FLORIDA weather for allowing me to play in the garage in January!). I looked closely at the bulkhead and followed the wires and there was a 4 pole one that had 3 wires going to nothing. all black, one with a white stripe and one with a yellow stripe. I had just run this wire up to the front, thinking it was a turn signal etc, but now I am hoping its the missing neutral switch wire. I am guessing someone just tore off the connection when they removed the powertrain years ago. If I am correct, all that I need is a 3 prong connector to plug it on the trans!
I am hoping someone knows the wire colors and can tell me that I have it and maybe where to pick up a plug for them.

I think thats it, manuel shows 2 blk & one brown w/yellow tracer, I should be able to get you a good pic of the harness tomorrow, the blue is def a/c the green too but not positive.
So you have the bulkhead connector, that should have the wires to the starter switch too, i show yellow & brown w/ yellow tracer. looks like the green is for a/c in the diagram.

MORE HELP? Re: No starting with the key.....

I agree 100%, will visit the Pick N Pull soon, I alreaday got some stuff off a late 80's Cordoba and hope there will be one of those on the trans.

Does anyone have the color codes for the wires on the starter relay? I somehow got the 2 on the bottom off and now cant be sure what wire goes where. I intend to ground the neutral safety switch for now but there is also a brown wire with a large plastic base that needs to be plugged on, but what pole?

I am assuming the yellow wire coming out of the harness beside that relay is for the neutral safety switch and it will not be attached until I get the wires run to the trans.

Tried to get you a close up of the relay on the diagram, I think the actual relay pic helps more, don't go by my fusible link, not sure if it's correct just had it laying around. Rich.

The a/c wires are green & blue, the green comes off the neutral safty harness & the blue is off the bottom left pin on the main plug at the bulkhead.
