Dr Diff 1.25" spring relocation kit?
« on: January 04, 2008 - 11:56:13 AM »
I got my fatty tires and my spring relo kit yesterday and hopefully can get started on it this weekend. I am hoping to lower and stuff 315's under the rear of my car.

Cass (aka Dr Diff) says I should do one spring at a time and to check BS and fender clearances as this will give me an opportunity to correct any pre-existing offset geometry problems. The kit looks very well made. Forward mounts are powdercoated with swadged studs. The supplied rear off-set shackles are OEM Mopar.

Has anyone installed this kit? I am told I will have to modify the rear valance slightly and will have to move spring perches in as well. Any advice on this will help. I have not touched the rear suspension on this car since I have owned it.

the shackles are closer on a Cuda so you May have to play with the valance a little , you will need to remove & reweld the spring seats on the diff housing

is that a big deal? Easy enough to remove I suppose with a grinder, chisel and a BFH? Will a MIG be adequate for this?

it is not a big deal , an angle grinder wil remove them , you can get a new set from mopar for $14 or so , what you do need to check though is the pinion angle , it should be approx 5* nose down , if not now is the time to change it if it is correct now weld the new seats at the same angle if not you will need to adjust it ,

I used a cut off wheel to take off the seats on my axle, then grinded down the left over.  I ended up not even using the axle as I decided to go with a B Body axle which is shorter overall to give more space for the tires.

By the way what kind of tires are those? What kind of rims are you putting them on too?  They are mean lookin thats for sure  8)

Thanks for the advice, CP. They are 315/35-17 Sumitomos, maybe the cheapest 315 out there at under $100/ea. I am going with polished TT'2s.

Is there a quick and smart way to check that pinion angle wne I am resetting the spring perches?

Mike,   Go to a hardware store and buy a magnetic angle finder. Sears has them, Harbor Freight, maybe even Ace Hardware. the bigger the dial, the easier it will be to read.    You can weld those perches on with a MIG but don't use a small 110v one.  Those perches are almost 1/4" thick and the axle tubes will pull all of the heat out of your melting wire before you get 100% fusion.  Use it to tack them on, then finish up with a big stick welder if you don't have at least a 180 amp MIG welder.

I have a both 110v and a 220v gas wire MIG, am not sure on the amperage capacity but it should probably work. I'm probbly making a bigger deal out of the pinion angle check than I need to but how do you determine the 0degree point from which you measure the +5degrees down?

The magnetic angle finder is just like a level (based on gravity), but will give you an angle off vertical as opposed to just a bubble level.  You just stick it to your drive shaft and read the angle.

Here's an example with its website:

I match the angle coming off of the tailshaft of the trans. it should ALWAYS match that. You can stick that magnetic angle finder right on the vetical face of the output shaft.

Sorry to butt in Mike but dont you just love fats! :woohoo: When you do research and measure them out on the desk there doesn't seem like a big difference in sizes, like, from 275s to 315. That is, until you see them in person or in photos like yours. It'll be well worth the effort. Hope you get what you need to get done and quickly.
