TA hood - who's repop is best? cheapest shipping to NJ??
« on: January 06, 2008 - 06:00:02 PM »
I posted this a few months ago...and only got 1 reply.   I guess it was show season!!!

Anyway:  I'm going to clone out my flat hooded 70 to look a TA.  I need the TA hood.  Harms has the nice steel scoop for my flat hood, but with labor of the install and paint...its cheaper just to buy a good glass repop.  I'd like it to be the best finished, strongest hood right out of the box....originallity is not a concern..I don't have a real TA anyhow.  Agree?

Anyhow...who's got the best quality TA hood?  Can I keep my stock hinges?  just change the springs???  how about shipping costs to NJ?

How about Unlimited Products??

thanks

Unlimited Products hoods suck.

Get a hood from AAR Fiberglass if you want one "better than new", they finish the underside as smooth as the top.

For as close as you can get to an original hood, there is a guy in PA that makes them. His only deviation form original that I am aware of is to install steel supports in the side beams to help prevent hood bowing. I think the name of his company is ACS&P or something like that? He advertises in Hemmings.

You will need to install the lighter weight hood hinges.

I got a UP22 on mine.  I didn't think it was that bad.  I never asked before I bought it. Some small imperfections in the finish though.  The shipping to MA was $$$, like 150 bucks.  They took a long time too.

I do not see one on their website anymore.  :clueless:  Did they stop making them?   :dunno:

AAR no longer makes a T/A hood.  Doesn't Year One <gag> sell one?

How was the underside finish on yours? I got a B body hood from them a decade ago, and while the top side was decent, the underside was a total hack job.

Whatever you do, stay away from Showcars fiberglass. They are the bottom of the barrel. Worse than Unlimited. Even worse than MAS.

I have an ulimited products/up22 hood and it is crap. It was bowed to begin with the quality was inferior. They basically build parts for race cars where fit and finish is not that critical.

Most of it was finished well, but has a few lines from the brush strokes.  I have to say that I've never bought a FG part before so I have no reference.  Although I did inherit a T/A spoiler from MAS and that was Junk.

Tom

I snapped a couple pics of the underside to show the brush marks. There is some smegma on the underside from a blown coolant line on there too.LOL

Also shows the painters lack of detail on the bottom. :villagers:  I might send it to a someone while I got it off. :drunk:

what about these? They offer full perimeter frames. I would think original hoods would not be desired for a nonoriginal car. They do not hold their shape well and their values are crazy. Fiberglass is fairly easy to work with or get someone to work on it for you I would pick a halfway decent aftermarket one and spend a little to have it reworked to the quality level you want.

I bought one recently from "meg-lite" on ebaymotors:

(Based on a recommendation from someone here.)  I've only taken it out of the box and haven't fitted it yet, but it seems to be a solid, quality piece.

I know Y1 does sell them, but from my conversations with them, is sounds like their hood is more of a true reproduction, with a bit of a bow to it.   Not what I wanted for a non-original car.

Let us know about the fit and finish of the hood please.  Also; is it a perimeter frames for stock hinges (w lighter springs).
Thanks!  good luck

I am gowing throught the same thing with an AAR hood. I don't want original crappy design. I want a hood that has the supports to stop from bowing like oem ones. Anyone have suggestions on those?

I don't know how much the scoop from Harms cost but it seems like if you want a hood as strong as the original, fit like the original, and finished underneath, the choice is the scoopand have it welded on and finished by a competant body man.
