MSD Distributor
« on: January 06, 2008 - 10:14:59 PM »
Has anyone got any experience with the one piece electronic MSD distributor? I am now pondering on what to buy. My engine is built to go 7000RPM. Also any experience on those DUI (not drunk driving) David Unified Ignitions?
I also have access to an original 68 Hemi distributor but that would be a waste in my engine, it would be better for someone wanting a NOS part for a restoration. I have to make up my mind here before I get the engine wiring harness.

Also - I need som help on posting pics- quite often people put  :useless: because no pics accompany some of the articles. I have dozens of pics to post but they are too big in file size.

You need to resize the pictures. Micosoft has a file you can download--sorry no link, I can't even spell Micosoft right, ha ha.

I downloaded mine over a year ago, once you have it you just right click the picture and click resize, it then ask what size and you move the point to small. Click OK and thats it, your resize picture is right by the old one but saids small. Maybe just google it or go the micosoft and search for picture resize.

As for MSD, I ran a 6 box for many years but it had no rev. limiter. Well I thought after my motor was rebuilt it be good to have. The MSD 7al box was like $150 more, so I went ahead and got it. The motor runs better at all speeds. Cold is the biggest improvement, idles rough but good with no choke after 30 seconds running  even in 30 dergee weather. Wide open I used to get a little bog if I punch it too fast from a dead stop, now with my MSD 7al and HVC coil, theres no bog at all.

They do not make it new anymore, its now the MSD 7al plus which does have a hotter spark yet but is like over $500, then the coil is $130. You could get a used one off e-bay, prices have gone up but are still under $300 or try a digital 6 box, I was TOLD its better than the 7al but its street legal so IDK. Stay away from the digital 7 boxes, they burn up on the street.

Its your call but since you seem to be after every .1 of a second I would get either a used 7al, a new 7al plus or even a msd 8 box--yeah, msd tech told me when I ask if the 7al box would last all day on the street every day, they said yes with the right coil, in fact even the 8 box would last too but when I seen the price, ha ha, the 7al it was.

Most will say the 6 box is fine, maybe so but theres better. Pro racers even use the msd 10 box and coil, thats too strong for 90% of racers but theres a good reason MSD makes all those boxes, even thou 90% think the 6 box is "good enough"

I used to drive the 7 AL, but just got a 6 digital, should be just as good, but with more options on rev-lim, and retarding, wich I got nothing of on the 7 AL (only 1 lim. option)....  Not on car yet though...

Thanks all - my son has an MSD6 box/MSD Coil/MSD Billet Distributor on his 73 440Charger. Goes good up to 5500. Thats all it was designed to do because we didn't want it to go bang while he was a student at High School. So I will get the Digital MSD 6 and same other stuff.

Why only good to 5500. Did it have a rev limiter?

I have a customer with a Stand alone MSD dist it works Ok , & he spins the engine hard , it did leave him stranded in Radium last fall ...Nice tow bill , it wasn`t the dist fault though , the mech wired it to the ballast with 7-8 v power so it burned up , MSD warrantied it to

Cudabob - we limited the Charger 440 to 5500RPM by cylinder heads being mostly stock and that 248º/0.484 lift cam that Hughes/Engle used to sell. Car pulls hard enough to sink your eyes back a bit with the 3.91 rear gears.

CP - who was the guy with the stand alone. Call me at home tonight if you wouldn't mind.

I've got a 6AL in my 360 Cuda with a Master Blaster coil....been in there just a short while (3 months) but it runs nice with it.  No problems what-so-ever.  Craig's List item for $150.00 but talked him into $125.00 when I went to pick it up.  :2thumbs:
