The depth you are looking for is 1/2 inch.  As you can see it is the same on the cap and car.  Is yours 1/2 inch?  If it is and the cap won't fit maybe the opening is out of round.

I inspected both quarters. What i saw was that the old original quarter, the lip goes straight in. Measures 4 1/8 ", at the top and bottom. On the new quarter the lip is tapered. The top measures 4 1/8" at top, and 4" at the bottom.

That will do it.  The trim ring is roughly only 1/16th of an inch thick.

Will someone please post a close up pic of their repop flip lid already installed on their car with the pic taken from the side. I want to see how level it sits as well as how far this thing protrudes out from the car and how much black base is supposed to be showing. I need to see it installed

I had heard the there could be a problem in that area with the old (before Goodmark) quarters.  When I replaced mine I had a NOS one, and the cap fits fine, but I did cut the old one out and saved it thinking I could sell it in the future.

I can not  correctly measure the depth because the outer lip is tapered in and not straight in like yours. That's the major problem. The legs of the base sit on the taper. But i can tell it's not 1/2 inch deep. Not even close. 3/8 at best

With the taper holding the legs out some, can the legs be ground down a touch, in order to get it in?  :dunno: Just asking, i have not seen one close up and not even sure what it is made of, or how. All i know is someone will have to figure it out, or i will have to stay with the standard gas cap, because my new goodmark fender is tapered in also. I cut the section out of my old fender, which i will probably keep, in case i decide to patch it in their.  :clueless:
