I had the same problem back in 92 when I put the quarter skins on my 71 Challenger RT. I had to modify the bottom mounting areas by grinding them to make it fit. It has been on my Challenger now since then with no problems. I kept my old Challenger gas cap opening and measured both and can tell you the skins were not made just like the originals. This is how mine looks on my 71 Challenger with the quarter skins.

isnt the filler necks different?

I looked at the repop again this morning and no way will it work without modification of the inside panel. Therefore i sent it back this morning to the ebay seller. Will this 1970 chrome gas cap work on my 73?

no way did that seal ever seal the filler  neck, an inside cap was always used

I'm curious where you got that information.

there were 2 different seals inside the cap , the small cone one in the pic if for the locking cap , the larger seal on a spring was used to seal the neck eliminating the inner cap

What you are saying does make sence.  I have seen the spring mount on a few early 1970 cars.  It is the same as the Dodge Charger cap spring loaded seal.  Maybe Chrysler ran out or changed suppliers.  I saw this gasket or cup the most on the stock cars.  It would seal off water on the locking cap so the lock wouldn't get wet that is for sure.  Either way Chrysler did it, a locking cap was offered under the flip top or the flip top was the only cap.  A non locking cap under the flip top was not used.

Not wanting to hi-jack the thread, just have some questions to add.

I just bought a flip-top fuel cap and a trim ring from eparts4cars at ebay, but I also want a locking cap under it.
Is there a special locking cap for e-bodies, or will any Mopar locking cap made for flip-top fuel caps work?
I haven't found any repro locking caps especially for e-body flip-top fuel caps. If it's a e-body only thing, are these locking caps rare?

I found a locking cap at ebay, starting at $409.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NOS-MOPAR-70-DODGE-CHALLENGER-RT-FUEL-TANK-LOCKING-CAP_W0QQitemZ270201614346QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item270201614346
This is a NOS part, still in the plastic bag, never used according to the seller.
I'm sure it's a fine cap, but it's still over $400 for a gas cap. Best to leave this for the people who restores cars to better than new, because if I bought it, it would probably be a pearl for a swine, since I want to use and abuse my Chally.

Staying in the NOS part of the woods, NOS Locking Gas cap that fits under the flip type gas cap of the 1967 through 1969 Barracudas:
1967 Satillite , 1968 through 1970 Chargers. Lock is NOS in the box:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NOS-MOPAR-locking-gas-cap-1967-1968-1969-cuda-charger_W0QQitemZ330202061020QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item330202061020
I sort of doubt that this one will fit a Chally, looks too different, but what do I know? :icon16:

So, I wonder if something like this will fit, obviously not a Mopar-only thing, looks similar to the one in the pic Challenger6pak posted:

At laysons.com, I found this part:
Part #: FS-671
Description: Challenger flip cap seal - with attaching hardware. 70-74 Challenger

Is this a special seal for flip-tops w/o any cap under?

...There was also a paper gasket under the trim ring so it would not cut into the paint...
To avoid cutting into the paint, is there a gasket available now, or is it no big deal?

If you're looking at Layson's this might be a better choice:

Fuel Locking Caps

This is a perfect reproduction of the non-vented Fuel tank filler tube locking cap. This locking cap fits inside the filler tube and locks in place with one of the two keys provided. Found under most flip top caps, but can be used for many 1967 and newer Chrysler vehicle. Original part #2925 881,

     Part #    Description    Price    Qty.
RD-25881    Locking Fuel Cap 1967-69 A & B-Body Many C-Body 1970-74 E-Body In some cases this part may not fit all applications
   67-69 A-Body
   67-74 C-Body
   70-74 E-Body

I'm just not sure about the "In some cases this part may not fit all applications" disclaimer, so I would call them first.

Thanks!

I wish you luck. People have had trouble with them delivering in a timely fashion. I waited about 3 months for trim rings.

Now that 73Chally has put me on the right track, and you've warned me, I've found one at The Paddock that fits 72-74 Barracuda (And 65-70 Impala) : http://tinyurl.com/ysbuk9
Looks pretty similar to the one in Challenger6pak's pic, but that doesn't have to mean anything. Can a 72-74 Barracuda fuel locking cap be used with a 72-74 Challenger?

Jims Autoparts have a good selection of gas caps, both locking and non-locking: http://www.jimsautoparts.com/fuelpart.htm
Locking caps for 70-71 have a different part# than 72-74:

GC-771   70-71 Challenger (for use only under flip up fuel cap)   $ 54.95

GC-783   72-74 Challenger (for use only under flip up fuel cap)   $ 54.95

Doing business with Jim's WILL get your burned sooner or sooner...check this at $17.95
http://www.cgenterprises.com/fuelcaps/mgc771.htm
I'm not saying they are the exact same thing, but I believe all Jim's is selling are some off the shelf replacements..No one else is offering these items & all they do is re-sale what is on the market.

I just bought a non-locking cap that fits under the flip top for $10.00 on ebay.  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mopar-1970-71-E-body-Challenger-Gas-Cap-under-flip-top_W0QQitemZ290192358313QQihZ019QQcategoryZ33556QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQtrksidZp1638.m118.l1247QQcmdZViewItem

It's not compliant enough to easily tighten onto the filler neck opening though.  I was able to install it without the rubber gasket, but it's not ideal.  Better than the rag I had in there before...
