Flip Top Gas Cap Problem
« on: January 07, 2008 - 06:26:12 PM »
Hello guys,

I just bought this repop flip top gas cap from a seller on ebay called smitty2 for $159 for my 73 Challenger. Anyway, it comes today and i try to put it on but the black base to the flipcap will not go down deep enough into the recessed hole to butt up against the trim ring. With the legs of the black base butted up against the screw holes inside, there is still over a quarter of an inch gap between the flat part of the black base and the trim ring! What gives? Am i doing something wrong?

No way does this thing fit down into the hole far enough to press against the trim ring. I've emailed them back about returning the cap today but i haven't heard back from them. Anyone else ordered one of these? Is my inside quarter panel area different or something? I'm thinking my quarter is indeed the original. Maybe these are made for aftermarket quarterpanels.

This was a 70-71 option. Maybe the later year rear fenders were different?  :dunno: I honestly don't know.

EDIT: I put a repop flip top gas cap on my 70 with no problems.

It fit on my 72 without a problem. Something doesn't look right in the picture of your filler neck but I can't put my finger on it.

I put one on mine as well(72).  I have heard that the old quarter panel replacement skins weren't deep enough to accept the Flip top properly.  But, I'm not sure if you got replacements or not?

I'm requartering a dart, and I had to leave the cut line just below the filler cap.  the replacement recess is way more shallow. The OEM recess is crisp, almost 90 sharp turn at the bottom, the replacement is a shallow slope to the fill hole.    I know its not a chally, but the repop qtrs stink at the filler.

Thanks for the info, Tom.  You don't happen to know how it fits in a repop quarter, do you?  Sorry to hijack the thread, but I figured this would be good info for others to know, too.

I would imagine it fits the same.  My quarters were replaced from the body line down.

I was hoping for a definate answer from experts here. They emailed me back and said it was for 70 through 74 Challys and they don't know why it doesn't fit and then asked if what i got looked like the picture. I just answered them back and said it looks like the picture but that it will definately not fit and would they have a problem if i returned it. I guess i'll find out tomorrow. $169.95 which includes shipping is quite a bit of cash to throw away if they don't take it back. Stay tuned. I mean i can put it on cockeyed like the picture someone posted and leave off the trim ring and that would look like crap so i'm not doing that. No way will it hold the trim ring in place. It sits cockeyed with one of the legs up on the slope.
