Will someone please post a close up pic of their repop flip lid already installed on their car with the pic taken from the side. I want to see how level it sits as well as how far this thing protrudes out from the car and how much black base is supposed to be showing. I need to see it installed

I took these for you, I hope this helps.  PG Classic Flip Top on Original Quarter.

I know you can't cut down the factory cap without making it weak and useless.  The only thing you can do is to dolly out the opening with body tools.  I don't know how much you have to go but you should be able to widen the taper in mounting points and mount the cap.

Tom,

Thank you very much. That is exactly what i needed to see. No way will mine sit down in there like that. I got a email back from the ebay seller and they told me i could return it. I said i would send it back tomorrow. Man, i really want one of these flip lids. I'm almost tempted to try to modify it by trying to grind etc., I'd hate to ruin it and be out $169

I'm not sure if i want to screw with the panel. I'm going to get the cap back out of the sealed box in the morning and take one more look at things. I know i can get the lid screwed into place with it being slightly cocked because i did that. But i was quite aways from the trim ring when it was tightened all the way down. It would look stupid without the trim ring. I actually thought about using some kind of bonding adhesive to hold the trim ring against the fender (glue, lol) but i'd still have too much base showing as well as screw heads

Trust me.  You are opening a can of worms that way.  If you don't know how to do it, a bodyman should be able to widen the opening with little effort.  If the cap does not seat properly in the quarter you will dump fuel on the side of the car when you turn corners.  You have a nice car; do it right and you will be happier in the long run.

Well, if in fact i did try to make it work, i was going to get a locking cap for inside of the flip-top so that would take care of dumping any fuel. Right?

You have to run a gas cap (locking or non) on the filler neck with the flip cap.

The original flip tops used a rubber gasket. If you had the locking gas cap option this would not be there.  In the 80's when I worked at Chrysler the caps without the inner seal were all that were left in the warehouses.  One of those was probably used as the pattern for the reproductions. If you don't have this then yes you need an inner cap. There was also a paper gasket under the trim ring so it would not cut into the paint. In this pic the owner added a locking cap.  I am posting it because it is a good pic of the gasket.

I looked at the repop again this morning and no way will it work without modification of the inside panel. Therefore i sent it back this morning to the ebay seller. Will this 1970 chrome gas cap work on my 73?

When you reworked the panel it wouldn't have been seen due to the trim ring.  I don't see why the other cap won't work.  The price is too steep.
