Anti-theft, anti-tow devices/methods - what are people using?
« on: January 11, 2008 - 05:54:41 AM »
Don't need anyone to give away the secrets to their vehicle security systems but looking for ideas now that the car is getting close to finished.  Will have immobiliser as that is required for insurance but mainly interested in the simple, practical, physical precautions that work.

Hey Mark, you could try a Koala Bear or considering how close you are to Tasmania.......... Tassy Devil would pack a better bite than the koala old mate.

But seriously you could put a good old fashioned kill switch in the line somewhere.

Kill switch as well as the immobiliser is probably a good idea for when you are out but wondering about at home in the garage when you are at work and they have time to work around things?  Bollards would be good but expensive, removing a couple of wheels would work but a bit of a pain every time you wanted to go for a drive.

You could get one of those fold down metal bollards with the special key locks................................

If you have an automatic you could make a kind of bar that makes it impossible to shift out of park.

Researching the bollards.  Did a search for the auto trans lock but no luck yet (before factory security systems in cars this sort of stuff was much easier to find - almost no vehicle security stuff in the auto store today).

What is a denver boot  :clueless:

It's also known as a wheel clamp.

Regular long-term parking has my car inside a garage with a wheelless Audi 5000 parked behind it.  No way anyone is gonna get it without being really obvious.

For security when it is in public there is the "Club" and an electric fuel pump with hidden cutoff switch.  Car would only go 50 feet before running out of gas and no car thief is gonna sit around trying to sort it out when he is in the middle of some intersection.

I will have to think of some things also to do to my car so my son and others will not take it while I am gone.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

Kill switch on the car.

Max Wedge the Rottweiler & TC the German Sheppard, no worries about anyone coming near the Mopar here at the house.

You should consider a GPS vehicle tracking device like this one.

It is reasonable to purchase, and only $100 per year for service. You can set a perimeter fence on it so if it moves, you will get an email and a call to your cell stating your car is moving. It also has a battery disconnect notification as well. All of the movement can be tracked online.

GPS units are good but don't let anyone know about it. Put the car in a container or steel truck and it's all over red rover. GPS can't penetrate the steel. So if you do get one, keep it secret, don't even tell your friends. Not that you can't trust friends but a slip of the tongue or a drunk burst of voice, word gets around and any would be car thieves can plan it out.

I run a tilt sensor for the protection of towing. My sensor sits under the console so is nice and central, if you lift the car or try to take a wheel at some degrees (forget what it is off the top of my head) the alarm will sound. As they say, at the end of the day, anyone who wants your car or wants to know where the car is, WILL find out. We just have to do our best to protect our cars. Alarms aren't to stop them, just to give them less time at doing the theft.
