Hurst Shifter
« on: January 11, 2008 - 06:09:55 AM »
Anyone use one of these Hurst Pistol Grip Quarter Stick Shifters on their 727 torqueflite. I'm thinking of putting one in my Cuda, within the existing console.

72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

I have a few customers with them , they work OK just kinda clunky to operate , the factory Slapstik is by far the simplest design & works great

I gotta agree. I filed off a litte of the indent in my stock shifter, and now to get into second (I have a reverse manual valve body) I just have to give the shifter a nudge, and click, I'm there.

So, do they have any advantage over a stock mopar automatic shifter?

I fitted a "Gunslinger" auto shift to my '70 Challenger, works fine, even has a little trigger.

Totally agree. The factory Slap Stik is the best IMO. Works just the same but instead of using a cable that can and does melt, you use steel rods. Works the same, shifts the same and is much easier to use, + you still keep the cool factory Mopar look. Hurst and B&M etc from what I have heard based their shifters off the slap stik. Another thing you notice browsing the web is the B&M and Hurst style auto shifters are like bum-holes, everyone has one, Camaros, Mustangs, Chevelles why be like them? ;D If you're after a little flair, still Mopar based, I have a Harms tilt pistol grip shifter in mine and love it.  :2cents:

Does your modified shifter have the push button at the top?

I see No adavantage over the factory shifter , the Slapstick has steel linkage Ratchets perfectly when lubed & adjusted properly , all aftermarket shifters use cables that constantly melt due to poor design & are more difficult to operate than the Salpstick

Nope, it's a stock "round ball" 70 shifter. Harms (Scott) has one for the 70 and one for the 71-74 (T-Handle). Take the ball/T-Handle off and it goes straight on. To engage gear simply push down on the handle and move the shifter. Works well and looks great.

With the factory slapstick is there a way from preventing it from going all the into first when your going for second? I usually shift up and down manual and it's happend a few times. Will the aftermarket shifters ratchet down as well as up?

A reverse manual valve body is a must if you are a street racer. Have one on my Cuda. Love it!
