Clogged Fuel System?
« on: January 12, 2008 - 12:35:04 PM »
My 73 is at the body shop now.  Wouldn't you know it, they are behind schedule, so my cars been sitting (covered and inside) for almost 2 months now.  I had asked them to turn the engine over at  least once every couple of weeks which I think they've been doing, but gas is no longer getting to the carb.
Is it possible the gas has evaporated or that gas in the fuel system clogged it up?
Is there a chemical treatment I can use to un-clog it?  I have a bottle of Sta-Bil which I was planning on dumping into the tank, along with some fresh gas, will that do the trick?

The fuel system is an electric fuel pump and two filters, one between the tank and the pump, and one cannister filter between the pump and the regulator.  Should I replace the filters as well?

Thanks in advance!

I say unhook the fuel line from the regulator under the hood and turn the key to start the fuel pump and if the gas comes out there you know its not clogged from the tank to before the regulator....  if it dont then start with the filters...

and if all is clear it must be in the regulator or carb but then you can see if fuel comes out past the regulator also to narrow down to carb :2cents:

I made an extra piece of long -an line to hook to the fuel line before going to the regualtor for draining purposes by activating the elec. pump.........

After sitting for 2 months, the gas will surely be evaporated from the carb. BUT, with an electrc fuel pump, it should be back up there as soon as you turn the key.  :screwy:  It sounds like you have a mechanical pump.  So yes, either gas isn't getting to the pump, the pump died, or the gas isn't getting to the carb. This shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

I guess what I'm most concerned about is:
A) dissolving any clogs that may have developed in the system
and
B) preventing new clogs.

I'm pretty sure theres a couple of liters left in the tank... of course, last time I checked, the gas cap wasn't sealing very well.  By now, who knows...

You would not lose that much gas to evaporation that quickly.  My biggest concern would be if there was some junk in the gas tank that has worked its way into the filters.  Like was mentioned above, the first thing I believe you need to check is to unplug the fuel line up front and turn it over to see if you get gas coming out there.

   :iagree:

Disconnect a fuel line up front, and as soon as the key is in the "on" position, you should have a flood of gas.   :scared:

Seriously, I did have that happen to me...  :faint:  Had the multi-meter out, checking spark, looking for a clog...duh...out of gas...  :pullinghair:

i agree with chryco, you could blow air through it, pull the gas cap off though, or you may end up with a "round" gas tank.  anyway, is there a new or old tank in it? if you clear one, it may end up with another clog. oh, not to mention if you use too much air pressure, you'll blow the "in-line" filter right off. so you may want to pull the sending unit out of the tank and check it out.
