After reading all the posts I think I'm going to go with an almost completly stock setup.  I contacted Gordon Ward about restoration of my AM/8-track and adding an iPod plug.  He responded to my email immediately and that alone was a breath of fresh air.  Here is his response:
The cost will be $175.00 to repair and refurbish, any cosmetics would be extra.$79.00 for the jack.
$15.00 return shipping.total $269.00.
Thanks.
Gordon.

His site is http://www.wardsclassiccarradiorepair.com/
This link is in another post but thought I would drop it again.  He also stated in his email that turn around should be about 5 days.  Not bad.  Turnswitch quoted me a price of almost $500 and that didn't include basic refurbishing and repairing the 8-track.  Gordon will do a basic refurbish and that is included in the quote.  Cosmetics mentioned in the email are missing parts and such.  Since my radio is complete I expect the total qouted to be accurate.  I think I'll try to get the radio out Monday.  I'll keep everyone posted on how it turns out.  Below is a picture of the before, I'll post both before and after when it returns.  I wasn't so concerned about the additional channels and power as some here are.  I probably wont be able to hear the radio while driving anyway.  It's just there to satisfy the purist in me and onlookers and able to play music while parked.  The iPod plug will allow me to play my music and even use a XM system if I like.  Thanks to all for the posts, they really helped me get this done.  I can't tell everyone how much info this site provides.  Especially for a dummy like me.

Does it get more power or does it stay the same?
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

Back to original specs.  The only modification will be the addition of a plug for the iPod.

I used Ward's and they did a GREAT job.  I had my am/fm refurbed and tested and an iPod jack installed -works great!  Although, i do think I'm going to add a sub under the passenger seat -needs it BADLY!!!!

Has anyone tried the IPOD connection yet?    Sure sounds like a great deal -- and solution!

update!!!  Sorry it's taken so long but I jst got back from a long trip (work) and got the radio installed.  It works great and I love the iPod plug.  I have speakers mounted in the back (package tray) and a fader switch next to the heater controls.  Had to use some redneckeree to get the fader switch working but the sound is great.  Still can't hear much when driving but that isn't a bad thing.  I thought I had postd pics of the refurbed unit but can't find the post so here are a few after....

the 8-track works like new, even sounds pretty good with a 30 year old tape in there.  It was great to hear that old clunk-clunk in the middle of song again... :ylsuper:

How does the radio recognize the iPod?  Is there a set station you need to be on or was a toggle added so you switch over to the iPod?

BP, you can see the iPod jack in the pic.  As soon as you plug the iPod into the jack it defaults the radio to that component.  When you unplug the iPod the radio plays, automatic.

Cool idea, I am going to run an extension to my console so I can plug it in there!
